  • Based from our Whangarei regional office with regular travel

Toitū te marae a Tāne, toitū te marae a Tangaroa, toitū te tangata. If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive.

We have a unique opportunity for a Wild Animals Advisor to join our Wild Animals team and contribute to programme delivery targeting threats to conservation rejection, specifically Kauri dieback throughout the Northland region.

Kauri dieback disease, caused by the soil borne pathogen Phytophthora agathadicida (PA), is threating Kauri with extinction. Protection of kauri is a national priority with a coordinated, cross agency, landscape scale kauri protection programme currently being rolled out. The purpose of the programme is to protect Aotearoa NZ's most iconic trees through, amongst other controls, sustained management of the vectors which can transport the pathogen, such pigs and other animals.

DOC and Te Tiriti partners are part of a multi-agency response, led by MPI, which aims to prevent the spread of PA and protect kauri forests for future generations. DOC is responsible for protecting kauri on the land we manage which includes many of Aotearoa NZ's most significant kauri forests.

He angitūtanga: About the Role

As our next Wild Animals Advisor, you will be responsible for co-ordinating a programme that will address landscape scale pig management in kauri lands with a view to achieve the goals of the National Pest Management Plan for kauri protection. The purpose of the role is to review the current status of pig management in kauri lands and build a long-term strategy. This will be achieved through building connections with relevant communities, individuals and agencies across kauri lands in conjunction with sharing knowledge on lessons learned from regions where management has been successful.

He kōrero mōu: What we are looking for

If you feel aligned to our Kaupapa vision: Papatūānuku Thrives and can meet the below requirements then we want to hear from you!

  • Sound appreciation and understanding of engagement opportunities with whānau, hapū, and iwi, community, and businesses to enable pest management programmes;
  • A sound knowledge of the legislation affecting DOC and government processes, procedures and accountability requirements;
  • Excellent people skills and a strong drive for results through collaboration;
