About Us
The Department of Regional NSW (DRNSW), NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI), Biosecurity & Food Safety division is responsible for effective management and risk minimisation of biosecurity threats to NSW as well as the through-chain regulation of food safety. It delivers a risk-based approach to policy and compliance and provides regional engagement and coordination in response to emergency incidents impacting primary industries and the food sector.
About the role
This is an office-based role requiring strong policy writing, communication, and project development and management skills, under direction of the Manager animal biosecurity preparedness and response. You will need to monitor laboratory testing results and interpret and collate results into reports which relate to surveillance projects. You will provide technical advice to a range of external stakeholders including other branches within NSW DPI, Local Land Services, other state government agencies, private veterinarians and industry.
You will lead and manage the development of policies and procedures for priority diseases to ensure ongoing surveillance and early disease detection and appropriate disease awareness. You will have the opportunity to work with colleagues in other areas of NSW Department of Primary Industries on various tasks and projects, as well as contribute to national committees and working groups.

To be successful in this role
You will be keen for
- a new challenge beyond clinical veterinary practice
- interested in applying your veterinary knowledge in the area of avian animal industries, disease surveillance, and emergency animal disease preparedness, and want to develop your skills in these areas
- want to help New South Wales monitor for any potential diseases on the horizon and to prepare for and respond to emergency animal diseases
We are looking for a Senior Veterinary Policy and Project Officer to join our Animal Biosecurity team, to work on developing and implementing specific disease surveillance programs and policies for, and developing and establishing relationships with, key avian stakeholders (both commercial and non-commercial) in NSW. This role works closely with Livestock Systems and Food Safety staff members on collaborative biosecurity projects.
Avian species (small holder and commercial poultry) are the focus, but work may involve other species if required. Experience in working with avian species is essential.

Essential requirements:
- Tertiary qualifications in Veterinary Medicine with experience in poultry and/or other avian species.
- Current NSW Driver Licence and the ability and willingness to travel within NSW.
