About the role…

The Senior Veterinarian Taronga Western Plains Zoo (TWPZ) is responsible for the maintenance of the health and welfare of all animals under the responsibility of the TWPZ branch of the Taronga Conservation Society Australia, based in Dubbo. The Senior Veterinarian designs and maintains preventative medicine programs and responds to day-to-day clinical care of sick or injured collection animals and native wildlife.

Key accountabilities…

  • Responsible for the management and provision of veterinary services and biosecurity for TWPZ
  • Manage a veterinary team, in regard to professional competency, culture and engagement
  • Undertake, assign and manage clinical cases as required.
  • Undertake approved research projects or assist with approved external and internal research projects by providing samples, specimens and advice.
  • Provide expert advice on Zoological and Wildlife health and care to approved outside organisations and individuals in the form of consultancies, media engagements, tours, lectures and written material.

About you…

We are looking for candidates that have/ are willing to:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent and eligible for registration with the Veterinary Surgeon’s Board of NSW.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in all aspects of the veterinary management of zoo and wild animals, and the implementation of effective preventative medicine programs in zoos.
  • Experience in the treatment and rehabilitation of wildlife, veterinary management of free-ranging wildlife and veterinary research.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience including people leadership, building strong stakeholder relationships, project coordination, and taking the initiative to solve problems and improve processes
  • Pre employment TB screening, Q Fever, Rabies and Tetanus vaccinations are a requirement of this role and must be obtained at the employees own expense
  • Obtain and maintain a current volunteer NSW Working with Children Check at own expense.
