As a Senior Veterinarian with Animal Biosecurity and Welfare, Biosecurity Queensland you will independently undertake non-routine, complex field-based animal welfare or disease surveillance, investigation and research activities.
As our Senior Veterinarian, you will:
• Use specialist veterinary expertise to independently undertake non-routine, complex field-based animal welfare or disease surveillance, investigation and research activities using relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols or methodologies to generate valid data and achieve ongoing compliance with relevant quality standards and workplace health and safety requirements.
• Identify new or innovative investigation/experimental approach based on knowledge of contemporary or emerging issues then initiate and lead associated projects. Plan and design non-routine field investigations that align with operational or team objectives. This includes exercising professional judgement (with limited guidance and oversight) to:
→ seek relevant information from a range of sources (review and interpretation of international scientific literature).
→ manage any risk within the operational activities or experimental design.
→ define appropriate resources, materials and equipment.
→ identify appropriate and innovative techniques and sampling methodologies.
→ determine appropriate data gathering parameters.
→ undertake and oversee project implementation.
• Manage own work priorities to ensure assigned tasks are undertaken effectively and efficiently to achieve operational/team aims and deliverables. This includes proactively identifying ways to improve efficiency or quality of work being achieved within the team/operational plan
• Undertake data collation, recording and retrieval using relevant information systems. Independently use appropriate quantitative and subjective methods to interpret veterinary findings for differential diagnosis of animal diseases and to identify:
→ legal cases regarding disease or animal welfare investigations
→ complex, high risk and/or State level issues
→ triaging of notifiable disease cases.
• Where relevant, actively engage external stakeholders to achieve effective biosecurity outcomes at the regional level including:
→ developing and nurturing own collaborative networks with regional external veterinary colleagues
→ initiating and facilitating community and industry stakeholders forums/workshops to address emerging issues
→ using veterinary expertise and legislative knowledge to interpret findings and advise industry stakeholders on animal disease issues and project outcomes
→ advising producers/industry stakeholders about routine veterinary issues (e.g., findings relating to endemic or exotic diseases/pests or animal welfare issues)
→ attending local and state forums/committees/community events to facilitate effective biosecurity risk management via provision of veterinary advice or insights
• Drive own active professional development program to actively develop within chosen area(s) of specialist expertise. This includes creating and contributing to professional networks in area(s) of specialist interest
• Actively facilitate team and organisational capability development through knowledge sharing and coaching of colleagues within broader team (e.g., biosecurity officers)
• Drive and lead a workplace culture that values quality individual and team performance consistent with best practice procedures, positive working relationships and continuous improvement. Where relevant, responsible for managing (under senior guidance) a small team, including associated corporate governance compliance and people management duties (HR policy, WHS management, leave, timesheets etc).
