About This Opportunity

The Advance Lab Technician (HEW 6) will be a part of the System and Translational Immunology Laboratory led by Professor Di Yu to undertake internationally competitive research in the areas of immunology.

The Advanced Laboratory Technician/Coordinator provides specialist technical support and subject matter expertise in support of molecular, biochemical and cellular experiments and possibly animal models in experiments for therapeutic cytokine and antibody research. They would preferably be experienced in one or multiple of the following areas of laboratory expertise: Protein Biochemistry (including recombinant protein (antibody) production, purification and functional assessment); Molecular Biology (including molecular cloning, qPCR and sequencing library preparation); Immunology (including tissue culture, flow cytometry and ELISA). Experience with in vivo animal experimental models is preferable but not compulsory. The role will be a senior position in the Group and will involve laboratory management duties as well as providing formal training to students.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Perform laboratory experiments and generate reports in an independent manner (with limited supervision and broad guidance). Asks pertinent questions, considers the implications of the research being undertaken and considers ways to improve the experiments being undertaken.
  • Assist with the training and supervision of researchers and students conducting research activities.
  • Ensure a high standard of occupational health and safety, risks analysis/mitigation and standards and systems, including inductions, supervision, equipment training registers, administration of Laboratory/Facility Inventories, reporting and investigating injuries, incidents and hazards.
  • Coordinate laboratory equipment requests, maintain consumables and other items required to meet planned activities and undertake inventory functions, ensuring that periodic audit items and maintenance schedules are met.
  • In conjunction with discipline-based academic staff, develop and maintain undergraduate laboratory experiments to satisfy learning objectives for undergraduate courses, including determining requirements for the preparation/conduct of classes; the development and testing of new practicals and participation in tutor training.

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position through to 4th February 2026, commencing February/March 2024.

At HEW level 6, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $84,871 - $91,158, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $9,300 - $106,655 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases - at least once a year.

About You

We are looking for a highly experienced Laboratory Technician and Coordinator to apply their subject matter expertise and advanced knowledge to the System and Translational Immunology Laboratory led by Professor Di Yu to undertake internationally competitive research in the areas of immunology.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Completion of a higher education degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology or relevant fields of biomedicine with at least four years or equivalent research experience. Master by research or PhD qualifications are not essential but would be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated laboratory knowledge and skills for one or multiple in the areas of Protein Biochemistry (including recombinant protein (antibody) production, purification and functional assessment); Molecular Biology (including molecular cloning, qPCR and sequencing library preparation); Immunology (including tissue culture, flow cytometry and ELISA).
  • Knowledge of relevant courses and programs of study plus an understanding of the range of research activities performed in the Facility/Laboratories, or the capability to quickly acquire such knowledge.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and presenting data and results - professionally drawing graphs, writing figure legends and method sections to a publishable standard.
  • Experience with managing lab duties is preferred.
  • Experience in training or mentoring junior lab members is preferred.
