The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Microbiology Supervisor in Microbiology to join our Reference Laboratories team. As a Supervisor, you will be responsible for overseeing and supervising scientific and technical staff, ensuring the delivery of high-quality laboratory services. You will play a vital role in achieving our strategic goals, exceeding customer expectations, and maintaining our market leadership in the field of diagnostic pathology.

 

The Successful candidate will have…

  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Science or a relevant degree in the field of Pathology.
  • Minimum of 5 years' full-time experience working as a Medical/Veterinary Scientist in a medical laboratory or similar.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical microbiology procedures and multidisciplinary diagnostic pathology testing procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, direct, and manage scientific and technical staff.
  • Proficiency in performing routine and complex diagnostic tests.
  • Familiarity with standard procedures, policies, and practices in the laboratory setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of computer literacy and experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Knowledge of quality control procedures, NATA/ISO accreditation requirements, and laboratory safety principles.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assume supervisory responsibility for a designated work unit and work function within IDEXX laboratories.
  • Direct and supervise scientific and technical staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Provide general advice to operational supervisors and relevant IDEXX managers regarding service delivery, equipment, technology, and staffing.
  • Perform routine and more complex tests without supervision.
  • Coordinate general workflow, including prioritizing urgent requests and ensuring smooth operations and achievement of test turnaround time targets.
  • Apply professional knowledge and judgment in the selection of appropriate tests/methods.
  • Validate test results and provide interpretation and comments.
  • Perform equipment maintenance and calibration procedures.
  • Conduct quality control processes, analyze results, and respond with appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
  • Investigate and resolve analyser problems or test methodology problems.
  • Participate in the evaluation and validation of new technologies.
  • Monitor the usage of reagents and consumables to ensure efficient utilization and maintain adequate stock levels.
  • Contribute to the recruitment and selection of staff.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities to increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Educate and train others by sharing knowledge, experience, and competence.
  • Maintain effective work practices and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
