The Opportunity at MCRI:

An exciting opportunity exists for a scientist or recently graduated veterinarian to take up a leadership role as a Senior Research Officer for the Heart Regeneration and Heart Disease Groups at MCRI!  You will join a multidisciplinary research team focused on developing therapies for childhood heart disease. In this role, you will provide leadership and guidance to across several research projects using animal models to understand the causes of, and develop innovative treatments for, childhood heart diseases.

You will have a key role in developing new small animal models of cardiomyopathies, in conjunction with MCRI’s Disease Modelling Unit and Heart Research Group. In addition, you will support ongoing bioengineering projects and xenotransplantation experiments for both heart muscle and cardiac valves in small and large animal models. The successful applicant will be expected to design and conduct research experiments within the Group’s research programs, implement new image based approaches to analyse cardiac physiology, train junior team members including post-graduate students, oversee small animal projects, contribute to large animal studies and coordinate internal and external collaborative projects.

The Heart Regeneration and Heart Disease Groups are part of the reNEW: The Novo Nordisk Centre for Stem Cell Medicine. The successful candidate will be involved in managing collaborative projects across this exciting multi-national initiative. This position is a unique and exciting role offering an opportunity to contribute to a internationally recognised research team and develop a strong biomedical and small animal surgical skill set.

 

Your Responsibilities will include:

  • Oversight of experimental programs, collection of high-quality data and robust application of data analysis
  • Conducts continuous maintenance of neat and orderly records, electronic lab books and data storage
  • Design and conduct experiments independently
  • Administrative research duties including oversight of the Group’s small animal colonies

 

About You:

  • Relevant PhD/Doctoral qualification or equivalent Veterinary qualification
  • Post-doctoral experience (>5 years required) or equivalent Veterinary experience
  • Well-developed technical skills in small animal surgery and relevant techniques e.g. echocardiography
  • Evidence of high-quality research outputs and impact as evidenced by publication records, conference attendance and participation
