Senior Quarantine Inspector (Dog Handler) Pool
Level 3 | Pool Ref AV8466
Exciting opportunity to be a Dog Handler in DPIRD’s Detector Dog Unit, undertaking inspection and certification activities to ensure compliance with biosecurity legislation.
We currently have three permanent full-time positions available for immediate filling and are also seeking to establish a pool of suitably qualified applicants for the role of Senior Quarantine Inspector (Dog Handler). The pool will be used to fill permanent and fixed term positions which may become available within the subsequent 12 months.
What will your typical day look like?
As a Senior Quarantine Inspector (Dog Handler), you will undertake inspections of passengers, baggage, goods, cargo, mail, vessels, vehicles and aircraft from interstate to check compliance with state biosecurity legislation.
You will be part of the Checkpoints and Surveillance team who ensure frontline operations of the Detector Dog Unit are undertaken to the highest standards. You will deploy Detector Dogs in the above search environments to maximise their operational capabilities and also their health, welfare and safety.
Travel within the Perth Metropolitan area and occasional travel to regional offices may be required.

We are seeking candidates who have demonstrated knowledge and experience interpreting and applying acts, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines, as well as demonstrated experience and/or knowledge in animal handling, training and/or associated management and welfare of working dogs.
The ideal candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people using excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.

The assessment process and stages involved in selecting the most suitable people for Senior Quarantine Inspectors is summarised below:
- Applications are received online and assessed by the selection panel.
- Shortlisted applicants undergo on-line psychological profiling and cognitive assessments.
- Shortlisted applicants attend an interview which will generally be held in the Perth metropolitan area. Successful regional or interstate-based applicants will generally be interviewed by video conference call.
- Note: Applicants who are shortlisted for the remaining stages are required to attend in person (in the Perth metropolitan area) and are responsible for covering any travel and accommodation costs that are incurred.
- Shortlisted applicants undergo a Functional Fitness Assessment.
- References checks are undertaken.
- A final list of recommended candidates is compiled, proposed and endorsed.
- Applicants are advised whether they were successful for placement in the pool.
- Appointments made from the pool and training commences.

Special Requirements for this position:
- Functional Fitness Assessment to ensure mobility standards for operational readiness are met.
- Understand and accept that regular shift work and weekend work is undertaken in this role (penalty rates apply).
- An acceptable National Police Certificate (police clearance) is required. If not currently held, must be acquired prior to commencement at applicant’s expense.
- A current and valid Western Australia C (car) class driver’s license, or equivalent is required (if not currently held, must be acquired prior to commencement at applicant’s expense).
- Must be able to satisfy security clearance for an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC)
- Quarantine Inspectors must wear a supplied uniform and abide by associated policies.
- The contract of employment specifies terms and conditions relating to this position.
Subject to appointment, successful applicants will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
- Satisfy requirements of Detector Dog Handler training.
This pool will be valid for a period of twelve (12) months following finalisation of the process and may be used to fill permanent and fixed term opportunities that may arise in this period. Please note, being appointed to the pool does not guarantee you placement to a position.
