  • LHI Officer Grade 5 - $82,506 to $89,788 plus 10.5% superannuation
  • Temporary full-time (38 hours per week) opportunity up until June 2026

About the role

Lord Howe Island presents a unique island landscape that’s home to many native plants and animals. As the Senior Biosecurity Officer, you will play a key role in protecting this landscape through the implementation of the Lord Howe Island Board’s biosecurity strategy. Managing a small team, you’ll be responsible for translating business priorities into on ground projects and operations that mitigate biosecurity risks for Lord Howe Island.

Your duties as Senior Biosecurity Officer will include overseeing field operations and staff, managing the health and welfare of biosecurity detection dogs along with biosecurity surveillance and investigation. While overseeing these operations you’ll also inform operational decision making through the monitoring and escalation of potential biosecurity threats along with the provision of accurate data and reporting to senior executives.

 

About you

You’ll be a diligent leader who can oversee multiple operations and coordinate various stakeholders to implement organisational requirements. You’ll be passionate about natural resource management and biosecurity with a strong knowledge of the unique environment Lord Howe Island presents. You have a demonstrated knowledge of biosecurity monitoring tools and techniques and you’re familiar with the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015 and relevant compliance requirements. Further to this, you are willing to work shifts over a 7-day rotating roster.

  • Demonstrated experience or qualification in natural resource management and/or biosecurity.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in remote areas.
  • Ability to use computers for information management

About us

Lord Howe Island is located in the South Pacific Ocean approximately 700km north east of Sydney and is part of NSW. The Island has a high proportion of rare and endemic birds, plants, and invertebrates, and has the southernmost coral reef in the world. Three-quarters of the Island is within the Permanent Park Preserve, which is managed similarly to a national park. There are approximately 445 residents and tourism is the major industry and source of income on the Island. Approximately 16,000 people visit the Island each year and there are 21 accommodation lodges.

The Lord Howe Island Board (the Board) is a statutory authority established under the provisions of the Lord Howe Island Act. The Board is responsible to the NSW Minister for the Environment and comprises four Islanders elected by the local community and three members appointed by the Minister. It is charged with the care, control, improvement and management of the Island and its affairs and trade, and for the care and welfare of residents.

Targeted Questions

Applicants are asked to respond to the following questions in their cover letter:

  1. Scheduling work for staff and/or contractors to carry out biosecurity monitoring on a daily, weekly and monthly basis is a large part of this role, can you describe how would you manage this to complete the work on time to a high standard and report outcomes to management?
  2. You will have staff of varying levels of experience and ability under your direct supervision. Demonstrate how you would bring all staff up to a similar level of experience and capability. What methods would you use to identify any gaps and monitor performance? How would you ensure you were successful?

It is an essential requirement of the role that successful candidates are fully vaccinated by receiving an acceptable course of COVID-19 vaccination as defined by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) as a condition of employment.
