Description

The Secretary’s Animal Care and Ethics Committee (Secretary’s ACEC) is established to give effect to section 25A of the Animal Research Act 1985 (the Act), whereby an individual may apply to the Secretary for an animal research authority.  Its primary responsibility is to ensure that activities involving animals for research and teaching purposes under its supervision comply with the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (the Code) and relevant legislation.

The role of the Secretary’s ACEC involves but is not limited to:

  • the consideration of applications for animal research authorities from individuals and small establishments that are unable to establish their own Animal Ethics Committee (AEC), and for the supervision of animal supply for research by individual holders of animal supplier’s licences,
  • the assessment that the care and use of animals for scientific purposes is justifiable, balancing the potential effects on the wellbeing of the animals involved against the potential benefits to humans, animals or the environment, and
  • supporting the wellbeing of animals by applying the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement).

 

Current Vacancy

The Secretary’s ACEC currently has a vacancy for a Category C (welfare) member, which is defined as a person with demonstrable commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals, who is not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution, and who is not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. Further details are provided below.

 

Duties Include:

  • Provide recommendations of an independent nature.
  • Attend AEC meetings (8 per year).
  • Review Animal Ethics submissions and documentation prior to AEC meetings.
  • Participate in animal facility inspections.

 

Essential Criteria

Candidates must be able to demonstrate:

  • They have a commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals,
  • Active membership of a recognised animal welfare organisation with endorsement,
  • They are not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution (DRNSW), and
  • They are not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.

Veterinarians with specific animal welfare interest and experience may meet the requirements of this category.

A written expression of interest (no more than one page), along with a short curriculum vitae (no more than two pages) is invited from suitably qualified persons. The expression of interest must:

  • Clearly state which Member Category is being applied for,
  • demonstrate how the Member Category and Essential Criteria are met, and
  • explain why you are interested in serving on the Secretary’s ACEC.
