Scientist - Vaccine Development

The primary responsibility of the Vaccine Development Scientist role is to provide hands-on technical laboratory services to the R&D (Biological) department with an emphasis on vaccine development.
Of critical importance to the successful execution of this role is the background knowledge and practical experience in vaccine research and development with emphases on the “key skills, knowledge, experience, qualifications and competencies”
The Vaccine Development Scientist role sits within the Animal Health organization and reports to the Vaccine Development Manager.
What You Will Do
Responsibilities include, however not limited to:
- As required and on project basis; co-ordinate, perform and assist in the development of bacterial, viral, and parasitic vaccines.
- Establish development of new products and techniques as required.
- Trouble shooting, problem solving assisting with investigations as a team member.
- Assist in vaccine trials.
- Assist with the completion of registration processes and documents.
- Assist in the development of QC tests for new and existing vaccines
- Co-ordinate/assist in other project work as required
- Vaccine seed management
What You Must have
Education:
Higher degree qualification with major in Microbiology/ Virology/ Immunology/ Biotechnology or related fields.
Experience:
Prior experience in animal vaccine research and development.
Extensive knowledge and practical experience in:
- Bacteriology and virology relevant to animal disease and vaccine development.
- Biology of the immune system in animals.
- Mode of action of vaccines and adjuvants on the immune system.
- In-vivo and in-vitro studies to investigate safety and immunogenicity of vaccines, including data analysis.
- Application of the Quality by design (QbD) concept in vaccine development, study design, statistics, and immunoassays.
- Adjuvanting and vaccine formulation.
- Development of Freeze-drying cycles relevant to vaccines.
- Development and application of clinical analytical tests (biochemical, immunological, microbiological, and molecular).
- Ability to analyze data and problem solving in a logical manner.
- Statistics – ability to work with biological data and support analysis.
- Scientific writing
Desirable:
- In depth knowledge and experience in the Australian regulatory systems for Immunobiologicals (APVMA, DAWR and OGTR).
- Demonstrated success in supporting the registration of veterinary vaccines.
- Molecular biology and biotechnology, recombinant DNA and RNA technologies.
- Recombinant protein expression systems (bacterial, yeast, mammalian, and insect cells).
- Epidemiology and animal husbandry techniques.
- Current technologies used in small- and large-scale vaccine manufacture.
- GxP and quality systems.
