Position Overview

The Australian Phenomics Facility (APF), within the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR), is a key component of national and local research infrastructure and provides high-quality laboratory animal services to schools and departments across the ANU and others, in the study of human disease. Clients of APF Animal Services include national, NCRIS-supported phenogenomic resources, commercial clients in partnership with the ANU, groups from the wider Australian research community as well as JCSMR core research Divisions of Immunity, Inflammation and Infection, Genome Sciences and Cancer and the Eccles Institute of Neuroscience.

The Scientific Services Manager is an active participant in the Animal Services Management team, reporting to the Head of Animal Services and working together with the Operations Manager, the Phenogenomics Service Manager and Section Coordinators to ensure operational standards and continuity of services are met.

 

About the Role  

The Scientific Services Manager will be responsible for managing the consistent, high-quality service provision particularly in the production and supply of animals, the provision of skilled technical services and training programmes as well as the data systems in place for delivery of these.  This role will supervise a number of teams as well as be engaged in the recruitment and development of professional staff. The Manager will build trusted and durable relationships and use their scientific knowledge to effectively liaise and communicate with research staff and other key stakeholders, both internal and external to the University.

 

About You

Our ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual who has a strong interest in the management of a research service facility, and who is keen to play a key role in supporting researchers to successfully achieve experimental design outcomes.  To be selected for the role, it is essential to demonstrate:

  • significant experience in delivery of research services at a management level
  • a sound understanding of complex rodent colony management and experimental animal management
  • experience in delivering high-quality technical services aligned to animal welfare, safety and ethical guidelines and frameworks
  • the ability to collaboratively lead, motivate and educate team members
  • an ability to positively communicate, liaise and negotiate effectively with a wide range of people including junior staff through to Primary Investigators.
