About This Opportunity

The Scientific Officer provides specialist technical and scientific knowledge and skills in support of the University's research and teaching endeavours in the disciplines of Anatomy. You will also be expected to proactively contribute to other diagnostic and teaching areas including necropsies.

The position is located at The University of Queensland's Gatton Campus, a combination of the rural traditions of its agricultural college heritage with innovation and a collaborative outlook to deliver excellence in research and teaching in agricultural, animal, veterinary and environmental sciences.

Just over 30 minutes’ drive east of Toowoomba, and an hour’s drive west of Brisbane, the 1068-hectare Gatton campus offers a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and world-class facilities including; specialist animal and agriculture units including a dairy, poultry unit, sheep and goat herd, horticultural fields, plant nursery, post-harvest facilities, research laboratories and greenhouses, an extensive range of plant and farm infrastructure, and UQs Veterinary Medical Centre. The campus also operates several crop and animal production units which are used extensively to support teaching, research and hands-on training.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Receipt, retrieval, storage and disposal of materials and samples.
  • Prepare chemicals, reagents, equipment, instruments, demonstrations and any other materials.
  • Troubleshooting issues with experiments and equipment.
  • Establish and maintain databases and registers.
  • Develop SOPs and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain relevant documents, comprehensive preparation/set-up notes and records of experiments.
  • Source, procure, install, maintain and repair laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Coordinate financial administration, including raising orders and payment of invoices in accordance with relevant University policy and procedures.
  • Any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor.

 

Research

  • Develop new equipment to general specifications.
  • Under general direction, assist in the conduct of major experiments and research programs and/or in setting up complex or unusual equipment for a range of experiments and demonstrations.
  • ​Under broad direction, set up, monitor and demonstrate standard experiments and equipment use.
  • Prepare reports of a technical nature.

 

Teaching and Learning

  • Facilitate and support anatomy and postmortem teaching and research including Practical preparation, delivery and clean-ups.
  • Preparation of cadaver and anatomy specimens for diagnostic, teaching and research purposes.
  • Liaison with referring vets with respect to postmortem submissions and cadaver donations.
  • Sourcing of required cadavers and anatomy specimens for teaching and research purposes from abattoirs and harvesting from postmortem cases.
  • The embalming of cadavers for teaching purposes.
  • Mentor and manage the shared duties of the Anatomy and Pathology Technician.
  • Review and maintain the Local Standard Operating Procedures of the Anatomy and Postmortem labs.
  • Ensure facilities and equipment of the Anatomy and Postmortem labs are stocked, maintained and kept in a clean and safe operational condition to enable delivery of teaching and research.
  • Participate in the School’s operational and administrative processes, including timely processing of external accounts, inventories and purchasing of consumables.
  • Undertake training, conduct duties and maintain records to ensure compliance with best laboratory practice and various approvals requirements, including biosafety, OHS, and biosecurity/quarantine.

About You

  • Bachelors Degree in Science or related discipline or equivalent combination of training and previous relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge, skills and experience in anatomy dissections.
  • Experience of acting as a supervisor and trainer of other staff.
  • Computer literacy skills including Microsoft Office and other computer based ordering and reporting programs would be an advantage.
  • High level inter-personal and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and a commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Self-motivated and ability to prioritise workload to meet deadlines and service expectations.
  • Commitment to excellence and an ability to work diligently with a high level of accuracy.
  • An avid interest or previous experience in the teaching and training of undergraduate and/or post-graduate students is desirable.
  • Laboratory teaching and research support experience is desirable.

 

What We Can Offer 

This is a full-time, continuing position at HEW 5 Level.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $72,212.51 to $80,430.02 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $84,488.64 to $94,103.12 per annum.
