A candidate enrolled in the program will be evaluated annually, and progression through the program will depend on the candidate's performance.
1. Objectives and description The residency program in equine surgery trains veterinarians to be eligible to obtain a specialist degree from the European College of Veterinary Surgery (ECVS). The program is directed by Dr. Gal Kelmer DVM, DECVS, DACVS, Head of the Equine Department, HUVTH and supervised by Dr. Kelmer, Dr. Amos Tatz DVM, DECVS, and Dr. Roee Dahan DVM, DACVS. A resident that successfully completes the program will be able to take the ECVS exams, and once these are successfully passed, the resident will be eligible for ECVS certification. There is a potential for an ACVS residency program and certification. The program will provide intensive training in equine surgery and lameness examinations as well as rotations in pathology, equine internal medicine, emergency medicine, diagnostic imaging, and anesthesiology. Some of the abovementioned rotations are planned to be held at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UC-Davis, California, USA, or other collaborating universities. Financial support for these rotations cannot be guaranteed at present, and the resident may be required to meet the financial demand of these (e.g., the cost of the flight and stay at UCD). However, the HUVTH is committed to making every effort to ensure that these essential rotations will indeed take place and be financially supported as much as possible as it was successfully supported in the past. The training program includes rounds and journal & book club meetings and seminars. The resident is expected to take part in the clinical teaching of students and interns. The resident will rotate with other clinicians of the Equine Department on emergency duty. The training program will include contact with specialists in other HUVTH services (e.g., Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Neurology, and Dermatology). The resident's duties also include initiation and participation in a research project, including writing the proposal and a grant application, performing the study, assessing the results, writing a scientific paper, and presenting the study in an international conference.
