The Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research (the Institute) is a not-for-profit organisation located in Sydney’s South West that conducts world-class medical research that specifically addresses, and can be applied to, the needs of the local population and wider Australia.
The Institute is integral to a unique collaboration with the South Western Sydney Local Health District, Western Sydney University and the UNSW Sydney.
The Institute’s Biological Resources Unit (BRU) supports over 300 researchers from some 42 research groups based at the Institute. The BRU team manage and maintain laboratory rodents for biomedical research. The animal facilities are equipped with Individual Ventilated Caging (IVCs) and are legislated for research activities. Rodents are housed in a PC2 containment level.
The BRU is currently recruiting a Research Support Officer to join the team on a full time basis to continue to provide high quality care and monitoring of animals as well as supporting the Institute’s research laboratories. This role will report into the Institute’s Scientific Operations Manager.
The successful candidate will undertake but not be limited to the following duties and responsibilities:
- Animal care and welfare
- Minor manipulative techniques with rodents
- Support to scientific investigations
- Operation and maintenance of equipment
- Records and upkeep of laboratory glassware, consumables and chemical supplies
- Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene
The ideal candidate will meet the following essential criteria:
- Tertiary Qualifications in Animal Technology or Animal Science
- Sound knowledge of the biology of laboratory rodents, animal husbandry, disease control and environmental enrichment along with excellent skills in animal welfare monitoring.
- Demonstrated knowledge of OGTR containment requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and perform duties in accordance with codes of practice, NSW legislation pertaining to use of animals for scientific purposes and the institute’s safety requirements and policies.
- Min. three (3) years’ experience in rodent handling and manipulative techniques, rodent breeding systems and colony maintenance
- Understanding of laboratory and animal facility Work Health and Safety (WHS) issues.
- Good organisation skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Computer literacy and the ability to maintain records with a high level of accuracy using MS Excel.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Available to work out of hours, including public holidays and weekends.
- Commitment to ongoing training and development.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a National Police Check.
