About the Faculty/Group
Initiated in 1976, the Animal Genetics & Breeding Unit (AGBU), is an unincorporated joint venture of the University of New England (UNE) and NSW Department of Primary Industries. The unit carries out research and development in genetic improvement for agricultural industries and is Australian agriculture¿s leading genetic evaluation systems research group. With close to 30 staff and over 20 Ph.D scientists, AGBU is widely recognized as one of the world¿s leading institutes in the field of genetic improvement and is now seeking a research scientist to join the group and pursue research that will help the industry breed more resilient sheep and beef cattle with less impact on the environment.
About the role
AGBU is seeking an ambitious research scientist who can drive innovation and help the Australian livestock industry meet the grand challenges of the future with fit for purpose genetics that are more resilient and have less impact on the environment. You will be a demonstrated thought leader in practical tools for genetic improvement and will have the ability to match the best science with practical application in industry. Your work will underpin AGBU¿s role in delivery of leading, industry relevant selection tools to meet genetic evaluation needs in sheep and beef cattle and ensure that the genetic evaluation and improvement systems developed and supported by AGBU are technically leading edge and place industry partners in a position of competitive advantage, globally.
The role will include contributing to scientific vision, supervision of Ph.D. students, and close coordination with industry partners. The role requires the ability to build scientific and industry collaborations internally and nationally.
About you
To be successful in this role you will have scientific vision and are an innovator with demonstrated capacity to develop new traits for selection in animal breeding programs. You will have a Ph.D. in animal genetics with a minimum of 3 years of post-Ph.D. experience in the field including experience managing research projects. You will have a substantial current and focused track record of research activity and outcomes and have experience with Australia¿s extensive livestock industries and have the potential to develop strong and sustainable partnerships with industry. You are a valued team member with excellent interpersonal skills and are seen as future mentor to early career staff including HDR students.
