Description of Work Unit
Faculty and staff at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (VDL) are among the nation’s finest in their fields of expertise and offer comprehensive diagnostic services.

The Colorado State University Diagnostic Laboratory system provides timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Diagnostic Lab strives to meet the goals of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biological Sciences (CVMBS) and the University through research and diagnostics to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate and post-doctoral students.

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Position Summary
The Mayo lab is seeking to recruit a Research Scientist I with training in livestock medicine and specific interest in bison ecology/epidemiology. We are seeking strong skills in quality assurance, protocol development and optimization, and standard assay execution, specifically ELISA development. This individual would participate in the collection and processing of various research-related samples and therefore must have familiarity with interpreting and adhering to technical standard operating protocols. Training and mentorship of project colleagues during new and ongoing research pursuits necessitates that the applicant be versed in strong communication skills, communication with the Colorado national parks service (NPS), especially with both individuals and teams of diverse backgrounds and experiences. In addition to excellent communication skills, experience in writing clinical records for livestock patients, technical or scientific reports and manuscripts, and ability to interact productively with coworkers is required. The ideal candidates will demonstrate initiative, creativity, and will have excellent organizational skills; we also seek candidates with enthusiasm, a positive attitude, who works well as part of a team as well as independently.

This is a one year special appointment position. There may be opportunities for renewal depending on work unit need and funding availability.

Travel expenses for interviews will be limited to a maximum of $3000 per candidate.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Applicants must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, cellular biology, or genetics or related field.
  • Must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree.
  • Applicants must have completed a post DVM residency in livestock medicine and have a minimum of two years of experience with medical handling of livestock, bison, and other wildlife species.
