About This Opportunity

We are seeking a Research Officer to conduct a range of research projects in the Queensland Animal Science Precinct (QASP).

Under supervision, you will be responsible for ensuring the appropriate protocols and procedures are developed and implemented and followed in relation to conduct of research trials, animal handling, occupational health and safety, animal ethics and welfare biosafety, administration and day-to-day operation of the QASP facilities.

You should be competent in the conduct of large animal research trials as well as staffing and planning research trials, experience in the broad range of livestock research, strong staff management and development skills, and knowledge of relevant policies, procedures and health and safety practices. Excellent communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders and work effectively in a team environment, would be well regarded.

This role is located at the Gatton Campus and could require some work outside of normal working hours.

Some key responsibilities include:

  • Design/set up, conduct, and day to day management, monitoring and reporting of research projects.
  • Ensure research is conducted as per ISO9001 requirements.
  • Assist the QASP Senior Manager and Assistant Manager with the development, implementation and maintenance of resources, procedures, protocols, operations and reporting requirements of projects conducted in non-containment, PC1/QC5.1, PC2/QC5.2 and PC3/QC5.3 Large Animal facilities.
  • Participate in the establishment of price estimates for potential research including consideration of all resources for the conduct of projects, the provision of Service level Agreements (SLA) and final invoicing to clients.
  • In consultation with the QASP Senior Manager, conduct internal audits and ensure equipment is serviced and calibrated in accordance with the specific regulatory requirement of the facility.

 

These are full-time, fixed-term positions for up to 3 years.

About You

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree; completion of an associate diploma and subsequent relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or relevant education/training.
  • Demonstrated competence in the conduct of large animal research trials including knowledge and understanding of the University’s animal welfare and ethics policies, guidelines and practices and their implementation in the research workplace.
  • Proven experience in the broad range of livestock research, in the handling of research animals, collection, maintenance and storage of a variety of research samples used in research activities.
  • Experience in the scheduling of projects and the ability to use research facilities effectively and to maximise the use of available research resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with current QASP staff, QASP researchers and potential clients.

 

In addition, the following mandatory requirements apply:

  • Mandatory Immunisations: It is a condition of employment for this role that you will be required to provide evidence of immunisation against certain vaccine preventable diseases.
  • Medical Clearance: It is a condition of employment for this role you complete a satisfactory medical clearance(s), including disclosure of relevant medical history, to undertake such work without unreasonable risk to your health and safety. Additionally, you are required to fully comply with necessary ongoing health monitoring procedures and control measures.
