The role
This post is to work on a new BBSRC research grant ‘Individual differences in affective processing and implications for animal welfare: a reaction norm approach’ that will investigate the existence of personality / trait differences in decision-making and their links to animal welfare in laboratory rats. We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher with experience in statistical and computational modelling to oversee day-to-day management of the work alongside a research technician, collect high quality behavioural and non-invasive physiological data ensuring the use of rigorous and accurate methods, analyse these data using both conventional statistical approaches and computational modelling analyse data, present the work at meetings and for publication, assist with organisation of impact activities and a workshop at the end of the grant. You will gain experience of running behavioural and decision-making studies using automated operant testing equipment; data handling and computational analysis; project management; physiological analyses; and communicating with stakeholders and other members of the project’s international multidisciplinary team.
The post will be based at Bristol Veterinary School on the University of Bristol’s Langford campus and will run from 1 April 2024 to 28 Feb 2027.
What will you be doing?
The postholder will be responsible for: overseeing the day-to-day management of the work including, with support from the project leadership team, that of a research technician; collecting behavioural data and non-invasive physiological samples; preparing samples for analysis; collating, organising, and statistically and computationally analysing data with assistance and advice from the leadership team; preparing conference presentations and papers for publication in high quality journals; ensuring project adherence to quality assurance, Health and Safety, University, funders and Home Office rules and regulations; helping with organisation of impact activities and a workshop at the end of the grant.
You should apply if
Applicants should have a PhD in animal welfare, animal behaviour or a related subject. Candidates who are close to completing a PhD are also eligible to apply. They should also have proven capability in data handling, collation, statistical, and computational modelling analysis. Experience of developing and using new behavioural assays to measure animal affective state and welfare will be an advantage, as will experience of working with lab rodents.
