THE OPPORTUNITY:

Museums Victoria, Australia's largest public museum organisation is seeking a Research Assistant, Birds and Mammals.

 

We are seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual to join the Sciences team developing and training community members in ecoacoustic field methods, data storage and analysis of Victorian wildlife. This position will contribute to research on post-bushfire recovery in Victoria and provide sustainable skills to regional community members.

 

Working with Museums Victoria Sciences team, core functionsof this position include:

  • Participating as a team member on creating citizen science field protocols using sound recorders and acoustic analysis workflows to survey wildlife in Victoria.
  • Organising and formatting acoustic data for use in the online platform, ARBIMON.
  • Assisting in training workshops (online and in-person) with community members on acoustic field survey methods and analysis.
  • Inputting data into spreadsheets to maintain research records of field-based research activities.
  • Tagging acoustic recordings with taxonomic identifications using existing call recognisers.
  • Organising and formatting data spreadsheets and recordings for registration in Museums Victoria's KE EMu database.

 

Relevant skills and attributes:

  • Experience conducting field-based acoustic surveys using sound recorders.
  • Experience with citizen science and working with regional communities.
  • Experience with identifying Australian vertebrates by sound (especially owls and arboreal marsupials).
  • Experience with analysing sound recordings using call recognisers (especially using ARBIMON).
  • Experience managing audio data, audio metadata, and maintaining research records.

OTHER INFORMATION:

Reporting to the Curator of Birdsthis is an exceptional opportunity for committed individuals to apply their skills and gain experience in audio surveys of wildlife, community engagement, museum collections and bushfire research.

This role is a part-time (2 days/week), fixed-term position for 10 months. The salary on offer is $56,271 per annum, pro-rata (Base of Grade) plus 10.5% superannuation.
