About the role:
The Veterinarian and Animal Control Supervisor will deliver Companion Animal Welfare and Control services to the Groote Eylandt Region and relevant Outstations. The successful candidate will contribute to and assist the local Indigenous Animal Management Workers with community involvement initiatives, Animal Awareness education and support, and the implementation of the EARC's Animal Control policy.
What you will do:
- Plan, co-ordinate and deliver appropriate Companion Animal Health programs including Veterinary services to the Groote Eylandt region in collaboration with local Indigenous Animal Management staff.
- Supervise and support local Animal Management staff on a day to day basis, and assist in their recruitment where required.
- Assist in Animal Management Training (non-accredited/on the job) and up-skilling Animal Management Workers, and contribute to the development of appropriate training resources.
- Deliver after hours/emergency veterinary treatments to Alyangula residents as required.
- Assist in delivering Animal Control services within Alyangula Township.
- Establish strong relationships with community members, identify community-based animal management issues and assist in the development and delivery of culturally appropriate solutions.
- Contribute to the development of appropriate educational resources, and facilitate the delivery of animal awareness education throughout the community (through school, work-place & community-based approaches).
- Maintain accurate records and report on all aspects of community Animal Health Programs and related data collection.
- Where appropriate, collaborate with local stakeholders to ensure effective Animal Management in the region, and where appropriate, negotiate local stakeholder contributions to the program.
- Collaborate with community members and stakeholders and assist with the implementation and on-going management of Animal Control Policy and local laws.
- Assist with some administration for Animal Welfare and Control Program.
- Manage conflict and achieve conflict resolution as required.
- Maintain a safe working environment and ensure that the Occupation Health and Safety Regulations are adhered to.
- Ensure Animal Welfare & Control equipment and facilities are well maintained.
To be successful in this role, you will possess the following:
- Appropriate tertiary qualifications as a Registered Veterinary Surgeon in accordance with the requirements of the Australian Veterinary Association and NT Veterinary Board.
- Sound knowledge of relevant legislation and policy impacting on animal welfare and control programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of animal management programs, reporting, and training.
- Demonstrated competency in sole veterinary services delivery.
- Demonstrated understanding of stock control, budgeting and logistical constraints.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to ensuring desirable outcomes for Animal Welfare and Control.
- High level of oral, written and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to liaise effectively with a variety of stakeholders and resolve conflict.
- A current drivers license with the ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle.
It would be desirable if you also possessed:
- Previous experience working or living within an Indigenous setting and ability to demonstrate a high level of cross cultural awareness in the workplace.
- Awareness of issues affecting Indigenous people to ensure effective participation in a cross-cultural environment.

Note: The successful applicant must be willing to travel to remote indigenous communities by various means including light aircraft, boat and road.
What you'll get in return:
A full time permanent position receiving a salary of $90,664.45 gross pa before superannuation guarantee contributions, and locality allowance. You will also benefit from 6 weeks of annual leave with 17.5% leave loading. Subsidised housing will be provided in Angurugu community at the cost of $75 per week + utilities. Relocation and repatriation assistance is available to the successful applicant.
