About us

The Veterinary Board of Tasmania comprises a five-member Board, appointed by the Minister to administer the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1987. The Board's primary functions are to declare, maintain and review standards for registration of veterinary surgeons and veterinary service entities; ensure that veterinary surgeons provide services in a competent manner; arrange for the inspection of veterinary entities; and hear and determine disciplinary matters under the Act.

 

Qualifications & experience

  • Experience at a senior level reporting to a Board, including secretariat, governance, and reporting accountabilities.
  • Ability to work at a senior level to represent the Board to government, other jurisdictions and professional bodies.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of statutory processes and administration of legislation.
  • High level written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage the human and financial resources of the Board.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in governance, management, pubilc administration, and/or law.
  • Experience in handling complaints within a legal framework.

 

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Ensure the Board’s adherence to all relevant legislation and statutory requirements, including maintenance of appropriate registers.
  • Provide expert advice to the Board on all relevant matters to enable it to exercise its functions under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1987.
  • Advise the Board on and develop as directed, any governance, policy and procedures needed for the effective operation of the Board.
  • Organise Board meetings and other events in accordance with the Board’s annual plan and prepare agendas, papers, minutes and other supporting material.
  • Administratively manage notifications and complaints in accordance with legislative requirements and the direction of the Board, including the preparation of correspondence and reports.
  • Prepare the Board’s annual report and arrange for submission to the Minister.
  • Manage the day-to-day functions and activities of the Board in accordance with the Act, Regulations and Board policies and priorities.
  • Effectively communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, including interstate Boards.
