He angitūtanga | About the role

As our Ranger Biodiversity (Quarantine Store) you will be joining our dedicated Operations team in Murihiku as you liaise with stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds undertaking compliance and risk management of materials that may pose threat to our predator free islands including the Sub Antarctic islands. Your role will be diverse and involves working with a variety of stakeholders including film crews, researchers/scientists, DOC staff, iwi and many more.

This role will require you to record and report about any visits you've had at the quarantine store and make important and responsible decisions regarding what can and cannot be accepted for travel to New Zealand's predator free and subantarctic islands. You will be required to record information regarding equipment that has been logged in and out as well as report on bait stations.

You will be responsible for maintaining and upkeeping the Quarantine Store daily, which will require you to have some practical skills as you take care of the pest control, general maintenance and cleaning and liaising with the landlord regarding any issues. You will also assist with the routine maintenance of vehicles, machinery and equipment ensuring functionality and safety to ensure compliance and smooth operations.

This role is a Monday to Friday position. On the odd occasion, you may be expected to stay later in the day depending on arrivals.

You will have a clear and confident communication style which will be key to your success engaging with the variety of stakeholders who come into contact with the Quarantine Store. You will have the ability think outside the square and be a pro-active problem solver as you make decisions that will ensure the safety of our biosecurity.

If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

  • a great planner with the ability to multi-task whilst balancing varying responsibilities
  • proven track record of data entry, recording and reporting
  • computer savvy with the ability to pick up new systems
  • critical thinker with ability to develop operational plans for the efficient functioning of the quarantine store
  • a high attention to detail and keen problem solver
  • strong health and safety focus
  • ability to assist with facility maintenance and upkeep of the quarantine store
  • current full New Zealand driver licence.

Desirable:

  • proven experience in handling biosecurity and quarantine measures
  • current first aid certificate.

Mō te tīma | About the team

You will join the Murihiku Operations team which is part of the Southern South Island Regional Operations team, and the store is based on Eye Street. The Murihiku Quarantine store is the largest within DOC as it services the sub-Antarctic Islands. You will report to the Supervisor, Community and be supported in the role by several casual staff, other Rangers in the Murihiku team, Senior Rangers, and other Supervisors.

The salary range for this position is $58,314 to $73,401 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
