The Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Program Leader Livestock Sciences to be part of our South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) Division within the Department of Primary Industries and Regions.

The Program Leader Livestock Sciences is part of Aquatic and Livestock Sciences, a research division within the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) and will be located at Turretfield.

The primary purpose of the role is to provide the research leadership, direction and development to the red meat and wool livestock sciences area, ensuring on the delivery of applied sciences leading to livestock production outcomes for the state. The incumbent is to work effectively within the Livestock Sciences science program and other SARDI research divisions, particularly the Pastures program in Crop Sciences to provide leadership as a senior professional specialist in the multidisciplinary and systems approach of livestock research.

The role will be responsible for leading and managing the research direction of the SARDI Livestock Red Meat and Wool Sciences team with a high level of professional independence including delivery of collaborative research on complex livestock issues of high government and industry priority. This includes a focus on livestock reproduction technologies, genetics, zoonosis and infectious diseases, and climate stresses on production. The role will have strong links to forage production within SARDI Crop Sciences through a focus on optimising livestock management across low, medium and high rainfall zones including production on improved pastures for low rainfall, mixed farming systems and includes feed-bases for methane reduction in the livestock industries. The role will contribute to delivering SARDI’s priority of leading and conducting innovative research to increase productivity of our primary industries for the benefit of South Australia.

Requirements

  • Essential: PhD in Agricultural Science (or related field) with significant relevant experience in livestock production research.
  • Out of hours work and inter / intrastate travel may be required.
  • You acknowledge your work, health and safety obligations and our expectations.
  • This position involves field work and exposure to heat, dust, pollen and animals.
  • Located at Turretfield with occasionally work off-site at other regional PIRSA locations and on private farms throughout SA agricultural regions.
