Principal Veterinary Officer – Cattle

The Team

The position of Principal Veterinary Officer – Cattle forms a part of the Biosecurity and Agriculture Services branch within the Agriculture Victoria group.

The Biosecurity and Agriculture Services (BAS) branch designs and delivers services, provides technical advice and influences policy to support the agriculture sector to achieve sustainable growth while managing risks and minimising adverse impacts to the economy, environment and public health and safety.

 

The Role

This position is within the Veterinary Science team of the Chief Veterinary Officer's Unit and supports the Chief Veterinary Officer through the provision of high level technical, policy and strategic advice on a broad range of livestock health and welfare issues, particularly in relation to cattle.

The position will influence and provide leadership and technical direction on livestock health and welfare issues at both state and national levels of government. The position will also contribute to emergency preparedness and response activities.

All members of the Chief Veterinary Officer's Unit are available to participate in ‘communities of practice' to build relationships, share knowledge, provide leadership, tools and insights, to solve issues within areas of common interest and if required, participate in emergency responses when possible.

Key accountabilities:

  1. Provide high level technical, policy and strategic advice at an authoritative level on livestock health and welfare issues with particular reference to cattle, including implementation of policy and legislation, to the Chief Veterinary Officer and other senior departmental staff.
  2. Influence and provide leadership and technical direction in state and national forums dealing with complex livestock health and welfare issues and policy development. This may include participating in ‘communities of practice' to build relationships, share knowledge, provide leadership, tools and insights, and to solve issues within areas of common interest.
  3. Confidently represent the department and own work area with external stakeholders in state and national forums, and effectively manage feedback.

 

The Candidate

The successful applicant is expected to have extensive experience in the provision of high level technical and policy advice on complex livestock health and welfare issues at state and/or national government levels, or have necessary skills to do so, and have well developed written and oral skills. An attention to detail and ability to produce high quality work outputs are considered essential for this position. An ability to work with minimal supervision is also important.

The successful applicant will work effectively as a member of a team, enjoy flexible working arrangements and undertake a wide variety of work across the organisation and in collaboration with a broad range of external stakeholders in public and private sectors.
