About this Opportunity

The Primary Care Veterinary Clinician will work as part of the Primary Care Team in the UQ VETS Small Animal Hospital within the School of Veterinary Science. You may also work as part of the clinical teaching team in the RSPCA’s Brisbane Animal Care Campus, Wacol.

You will be responsible for providing high quality, relationship-centred veterinary care to patients presenting to the Small Animal Hospital. You will also actively participate in the clinical teaching and instruction of undergraduate veterinary science and veterinary technology students, as well as clinical training and mentoring of small animal interns and junior clinicians.

Clinical contribution at the RSCPA Brisbane Animal Care Campus, Wacol will focus on the principles of shelter medicine, management and treatment of animals in a shelter setting and the development of small animal surgical skills in undergraduate students and interns.

The position is located at The University of Queensland's Gatton Campus, a combination of the rural traditions of its agricultural college heritage with innovation and a collaborative outlook to deliver excellence in research and teaching in agricultural, animal, veterinary and environmental sciences.

Just over 30 minutes’ drive east of Toowoomba, and an hour’s drive west of Brisbane, the 1068-hectare Gatton campus offers a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and world-class facilities including; specialist animal and agriculture units including a dairy, poultry unit, sheep and goat herd, horticultural fields, plant nursery, post-harvest facilities, research laboratories and greenhouses, an extensive range of plant and farm infrastructure, and UQs Veterinary Medical Centre. The campus also operates several crop and animal production units which are used extensively to support teaching, research and hands-on training.

Key responsibilities include:

Clinical Service

HEW Level 6:

  • Provide high quality, relationship-centred care to small animal patients and clients, and independently manage routine veterinary services.
  • Provide care for wildlife cases when needed
  • Provide an excellent clinical role model for students and colleagues.
  • Be able to identify more complex or difficult veterinary cases and seek assistance from experienced veterinary staff on these cases
  • Develop expertise in clinical veterinary service
  • Identify and contribute to opportunities for improvement within the hospital

Additional for HEW Level 7:

  • Be able to provide mentoring and clinical leadership to junior staff in managing more difficult or complex clinical cases
  • Continue to develop expertise in clinical veterinary service
  • Identify and contribute to opportunities for improvement within the hospital

 

Teaching and Learning

  • Where any undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is undertaken achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students and improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.
  • Actively support the University in identifying innovative and creative opportunities for the practice learning of students

HEW Level 6:

  • Assist in the clinical training and of undergraduate and postgraduate students through demonstration and practical instruction
  • Develop expertise in clinical teaching
  • Assist in the pre-clinical teaching of undergraduate students where required by the School of Veterinary Science.

Additional for HEW Level 7:

  • Actively participate in clinical training of undergraduate & postgraduate students, interns and residents
  • Continue to develop expertise in clinical teaching
  • Contribute to the pre-clinical teaching of undergraduate students where required by the School of Veterinary Science.

 

Service and Engagement

HEW Level 6/7:

  • Actively promote and foster the School’s relations with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.
  • Actively participate in CE events for personal development

 

Management and Administration

HEW Level 6/7:

  • Contribute to daily operations and management of the service and practice good business management.
  • Other duties as directed by Service Head, the Hospital Director, management staff, and the Head of School.

About You

  • A Bachelor of Veterinary Science or equivalent degree, registrable in Queensland.
  • Relevant experience in the delivery of veterinary clinical service in general practice or emergency and critical care. For appointment at level Hew 7, demonstrated experience performing at an advanced clinical level, which may include:
    • Completion of an internship incorporating exposure to and management of small animal or emergency and critical care cases.
    •  Award of membership of ANZCVS or equivalent.
    • An equivalent combination of qualifications, training and experience.
  • Demonstrated relationship-centred approach to veterinary care, with a commitment to developing genuine partnerships with the entire healthcare team, including the client.
  • Demonstrated accountability and a proactive attitude with the enthusiasm and drive to identify and contribute to improvements within the Small Animal Hospital.
  • Commitment and enthusiasm for the education of Veterinary Science and Veterinary Technology students.
  •  Capacity to serve as an excellent clinical veterinary role model.
  • An understanding and knowledge of relevant legislative and professional requirements relating to veterinary practice in QLD and to veterinary health and safety requirements.
  • Ability to establish effective professional relationships and to represent the School of Veterinary Science to the university and wider community, including industry, government and professional bodies.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, teamwork, negotiation and consultation skills and formal written and oral communication skills.

 

What We Can Offer  

This is a full-time, continuing position at HEW Level 6/7.

At HEW Level 6, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $84,871.95 to $91,158.90 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $99,300.18 to $106,655.91 per annum.

At HEW Level 7, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $93,254.55 to $101,680.96 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $109,107.82 to $118,966.72 per annum.
