About the Role
The position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Veterinary Microbiology) will be responsible for overseeing and conducting the day-to-day tasks of a research project primarily aiming to investigate the causes of respiratory diseases in poultry. The Research Fellow will have advanced skills developed in pathology, microbiology and molecular biology particularly whole genome sequence analysis. The incumbent will be expected to work under limited supervision, receiving support and guidance from more senior academic staff and will be required to assist other research staff and postgraduate students when required.
The incumbent will work with field and experimental animals as required to conduct the tasks of the research project. This position is primarily based at the Werribee campus of the University of Melbourne however, the incumbent may be required to commute to or work from the Parkville campus, or travel within Australia to collect field specimens.
Responsibilities include:
- Under limited supervision, conducting research and delivering against research objectives to meet project milestones and reporting schedule
- Taking direction from project supervisor(s) on medium to long term project strategies
- Participating in the communication and dissemination of information relating to the discipline
- With support and guidance from more senior academic staff, supervising or co-supervising and/or mentoring more junior academics staff and students
About You
You will have excellent attention to detail and experience in critical thinking, data analysis and skills in the use of statistical analysis software. You will possess well-developed written and oral communication skills, appropriate for scientific audiences as well as strong organisational abilities and can work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team and to effectively liaise with internal and external networks to foster collaborative partnerships using well-developed interpersonal skills.
You will also have:
- A PhD degree in Veterinary Science, Agriculture, Science, or related fields awarded or submitted before commencement of the position
- Demonstrated ability to undertake collaborative research under limited supervision and deliver against research objectives, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, journal articles or other scholarly output as well as oral and written presentations to industry and lay audiences, as appropriate to academic achievement and opportunity
- Demonstrated ability in basic clinical microbiological techniques
- Demonstrated ability in basic and advanced molecular biological skills including whole genome sequence analysis, bioinformatics and bacterial transformations
