About the Role
As Policy Director you will report to the Chief Operating Officer. Your role is to develop, prioritise and advocate policies. You will drive the two-way flow of information and build relationships that meet both of current priority needs and anticipate future priority positions. We are seeking someone who can think objectively, broadly, and respectfully challenge current thinking.
Success in this role depends on engaging effectively with the team to drive actionable positions that achieve tangible outcomes. You will be able to foster a positive, collaborative, and flexible working environment for the passionate and engaged team you lead. Together you and the team will engage in biosecurity, animal welfare, environment, workforce, trade and labelling arenas to name a few.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading team development of APL’s regulatory and policy framework
- Reporting policy intelligence, evolution and insight in ways that result in clear recommendations for improving APL & industry’s positions
- Continuously develop on-going dialogue with stakeholders including regulators, legislators, politicians and relevant advisory groups as well as State organisations
- Create a leading and “can do” reputation for the identification, mitigation, avoidance and ideally elimination of risks amongst producer and other stakeholders.
- Provide leadership and direction for the Policy team to deliver program objectives including development and coaching of team members.
- Contribute as an active member of the APL Operations team to drive APL’s targeted outcomes in both planning and execution.

- Highly practised proven leadership; high-performing policy program management and outcomes for both internal teams and diverse groups of Stakeholders.
- Advanced skills at constructing written and in-person arguments that influence (including game-play contingencies) successful outcomes.
- Strong networks coupled with extensive experience of effective advocacy.
- Knowledge and experience of the agricultural policy, legislative and regulatory environment that enable foresight.
- A high-level of understanding of advocacy process.
This is a full-time position, based ideally in Canberra, with an anticipated start date in November 2022.
