Inpatient and outpatient care nurse
Do you love to chat with pet owners?
Are you looking to join a supportive team and learn about specialist surgical
cases?
Do you want to work like a mini-vet?
How does 3 days per week (full-time equivalent) sound?
About us:
You will be based in our state-of-the-art 24hr emergency and specialist hospital which has a
brand new 1.5T MRI, 64 slice CT, fluoroscopy, endoscopy, digital radiology and ultrasound,
just to name a few. At the Advanced Treatment Centre (ATC) we are passionate about

comfortable asking any questions, no matter how simple they seem.
About you:
We are looking for an experienced nurse who is passionate about providing attentive and
personal patient care while building relationships with their dedicated pet owners.
This is a fun and unique role that provides nursing support for the surgical specialists and
hospital nursing staff in relationship to patient care, while allowing you the freedom to run
your own appointment schedule and work alongside our talented team.
Attentive, open and professional communication with clients is key to this role. You will act
as a secondary client liaison support for outpatient care and collaborate with their families
in their ongoing treatment.
The most rewarding part is seeing how grateful your patient’s families are for all your
efforts!
You would be one of a team of nurses dedicated specifically to this role, working hand in
hand with our surgical vets. Your job will involve assisting the vets manage the patients from
intake, to discharge and follow-up care.
You will also have the support of our fabulous reception team, our surgical coordinators,
rehabilitation department, interns, residents and specialist surgeons to deliver optimal
patient care and flow.
What our ideal candidate has to offer
- A desire to work closely with our patients throughout their entire VSOS journey, and
build rapport with their fabulous owners.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills together with endless patience
- Confidence in discussing medications including side effects
- Someone who is hungry to learn more, and contribute their skills and talent.
- You thrive in a busy fast paced dynamic environment
- You will have the meticulous attention to detail required to meet the practice's high
standard of nursing, record keeping, customer service, and cleanliness
- You love “hands on” patient care, and would like to be part of the decision making
for our patients.
Qualifications:
- Completed formal qualifications in Veterinary Nursing (Min Cert IV)
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in general practice (or 2 years in specialist practice)
- Knowledge of EzyVet and SmartFlow would be highly regarded but not essential
Responsibilities:
- Conduct efficient admission and discharge of patients into and out of the hospital
- Conduct basic examinations and diagnostic procedures (eg blood tests, suture removals, bandage and dressing changes, and recheck xrays)
- Reviewing care plans and records, maintaining patient records, billing of procedures
- Provide client liaison support and provide advice for basic post-surgical care
- Promptly address clients’ questions and concerns
- Conduct follow up phone calls for outpatients
- Facilitate dispensing and administration of medication
- Assist in managing the hospital care and treatment of surgical inpatients
- Provide in-patient updates for clients
- Be a secondary contact person for the reception team
- Play a part in managing your own patient visits to maintain case continuity
- Learning and have fun every day!
At VSOS, nurse education is highly regarded, and participation in our regular nurse training
and seminars is encouraged.
If learning how to operate the CT scanner, or scrubbing into major surgery with the
specialists excites you….we can make that happen! If you have the desire, you could
contribute to leadership and training of other nurses working in outpatient areas.
What is on offer for you:
- 3 days per week – full time equivalent (ie 3 x 12 hour days)
- Remuneration will be above average depending on level of experience and anticipated clinical output
- Interdepartmental collaboration opportunities across imaging, diagnostics, medicine and surgery teams
- A supportive and approachable leadership team
- Learning/training opportunities and career progression
- Reputable childcare facilities next door
This is a full-time position, but we roster to allow you plenty of time to enjoy all things you
love outside of work! A part time position would be considered for the right applicant. No
on-call or after hours, unless you would like to join the on-call surgery roster.
