North Central Victoria – Mobile Wildlife Veterinarian

Wildlife Victoria

6 month contract (part time/full time options available)

An exciting and rare opportunity to join the ground breaking Wildlife Victoria Travelling Veterinary Service at its inception.  This is one of the most unique veterinary roles in Victoria.

  • Apply your demonstrated passion for wildlife medicine to respond to varied in field wildlife cases
  • Maintain your sense of calm as a first responder whilst providing empathy to animals and people in difficult situations
  • Work thoughtfully and constructively with a highly motivated and close knit team to develop and shape a new service
  • Engage broadly across the wildlife sector and with veterinary practices and local communities in your response zone
  • Enjoy a varied and flexible environment working from a fully kitted out 4WD vehicle

Wildlife Victoria is a not for profit organisation that has provided the Victorian community with a Wildlife Emergency Response for over 30 years.  Annually we receive close to 100,000 requests for help to respond to sick, injured and orphaned wildlife.  Extending services into wildlife veterinary support, this is a unique opportunity to join our pilot program and help shape a groundbreaking and much needed service that will improve welfare outcomes for wildlife across the State.

Based in the Goulburn Valley area of Victoria you will be a first responder attending urgent wildlife cases requiring veterinary assessment in the region.  You will be on the road for a large portion of your working day, and as well as attending cases in field you will assist local wildlife shelters with clinical management of more complex cases of a variety of native species.  This role also includes some after hours/at call work.

You will have access to peer veterinary support both within and external to Wildlife Victoria and will develop strong working relationships with affiliate veterinary practices within your response zone.  You will engage into the local community and may occasionally be called on to interact with media.

The successful applicant will be prepared to attain a firearms licence and/or use a captive bolt device and can work within Codes of Practice in realistically assessing the welfare and prognosis of wildlife cases, progressing to in-field euthanasia if necessary.  You will be committed to a high level of record keeping and due process particularly in the areas of scheduled drugs, firearms use and work with statutory authorities such as Victoria Police and DELWP.

While wildlife medicine can be very fulfilling when animals are successfully rescued and rehabilitated for return to the wild, this role will also require you to humanely euthanaise several injured or unwell animals as part of most shifts. It is important that candidates consider their preparedness for this aspect of the job role.
