About the role
Due to continued growth, we are seeking a proactive, resourceful team player to join our company as a Microbiologist.
Duties include:
- Planning and conducting bacterial, viral and recombinant vaccine manufacturing and quality assurance processes.
This includes: identify micro-organisms via colony identification or other methods, optimizing the growth condition specific microorganisms Conducting required quality check processes.
Analysis of the cultures and conducting cell counts using a microscope, and performing specific quality control tests such as purity, sterility and inactivation.
- Investigating any out of specification results by performing gram-staining and carrying out biochemical tests such as oxidase test and catalase test.
- Adhering to strict Good Manufacturing Practice guidelines when reporting and documenting all observations and results from microbiological tests.
- Training and supervising new staff on vaccine production. This ranges from culturing and inactivating microorganisms, producing emulsifications and sterile filling of vaccines.
- Ensuring media made in-house for microbial growth meets all standards required, e.g. pH level.
- Operating laboratory equipment such as autoclaves, centrifuges and biosafety cabinets, and performing technical assays e.g. PAGE, western blotting and column chromatography.
- Testing antigen titres in animal vaccines using procedures such as agglutination tests and enumeration of cells.
- Performing and checking final products to ensure all meet release specifications.
Skills, Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications required
- Post-Graduate or graduate degree in a relevant biological science, ideally with a focus on microbiology and molecular biology.
- Hands on experience with benchtop bioreactors/fermenters and process development.
- Familiarity with cGMP operations.
- Familiarity with a range of industrially relevant microbes (bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi) and cell lines.
- Ability to analyse data. Logical and analytical approach to problem solving.
- Good organisational skills. Self-starter with initiative who works well with minimal supervision.
- Sound knowledge of relevant scientific techniques, procedures and principles.
- Demonstrated agility in using different IT systems & technologies.
- Ability to develop good working relationships with others. Collaborative mindset and effective communication skills.
- Availability to work weekends and out-of-hours when required.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and to make sound decisions on a day to day basis.
- Demonstrated superior written, verbal & interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience in R&D in the animal health sector, particularly vaccines, is highly desirable.
