Medical Technologist (Multiple Positions)
The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for the position of Medical Technologist in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory. The primary purpose of this position is to provide diagnostic laboratory technical support by learning and performing routine and specialized tests in the areas of hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, hemostasis, blood-typing, cross-matching, preparation of cytological samples for evaluation by a pathologist, and preparation of routine primary cultures for bacteriology in a veterinary hospital setting. Depending on qualifications of the successful candidate, position will begin as a Medical Technologist 1 or 2, or Senior Medical Technologist 1 or 2. More responsibilities will be expected of individuals hired at a more advanced rank.
Typical Responsibilities:
Accessions and prepares specimens for analysis and performs testing in the areas of chemistry, coagulation, hematology, urinalysis, hemostasis, blood-typing, and cross-matching. Accessions and prepares cytology specimens for the pathologist on duty. Performs manual cell differential counts on blood smears and fluids. Prepares routine plating of bacteriology specimens. Reports patient results to clinical personnel. Properly stores patient specimens in case of repeat or next-day analysis.
Performs daily quality control +/- calibration, as needed, on instruments in the laboratory. Performs or assists with weekly and monthly maintenance on all laboratory instruments. Assists in troubleshooting and correcting problems that arise in procedures and instrumentation.
Answers questions regarding test ordering and test requirements. Assists in filing the previous day's specimens and reports, stocking supplies, and cleaning as needed. Performs or assists with editing and cancelation of incorrect orders and preparation of send-out tests.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology required, but related Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degrees (in related field such as Veterinary Technology) will also be considered.
The successful candidate must achieve relevant professional certification in clinical pathology within an appropriate time frame.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology with ASCP certification are preferred. Additional relevant work experience preferred.
Additional Information:
The person in this position will join existing staff in the Veterinary Medical Center’s Clinical Pathology Laboratory, which currently includes five other ASCP-certified medical technologists, one laboratory assistant, four faculty board-certified in veterinary clinical pathology, and one to two clinical pathology residents. The laboratory serves the Veterinary Medical Center (small and large animal hospitals) and local and regional veterinary practices, with an approximate testing volume of 24,000 samples annually.
This will be a regular, full-time position having full benefits. Work hours will be fixed on nights and weekends.
