Marine Response Unit Keeper - Melbourne Zoo

  • Specialist level - minimum Trade level keeper
  • Fixed term Full time starting December 2021 for a 12 month period
  • Roster includes working 4 weekend days every 4 weeks
  • Salary $86,405 p.a including weekend loading + 10% superannuation

Victoria's coastline is host to a rich diversity of wildlife species as well as being an important recreation area for the people of Victoria. Inevitably this results in situations of animal-human conflict that can result in detrimental impacts to animal welfare. Melbourne Zoo's Marine Response Unit aims to improve welfare outcomes for distressed, injured and entangled marine wildlife, contribute to the understanding of health in marine animal populations and aid conservation initiatives for marine species within the State of Victoria.

Our team has an opening for a full time position for a twelve month fixed term period commencing in December 2021.The Marine Response Unit keeper will play a key role in delivering the operational objectives of the Unit. These center around case assessments, coordination of a rescue response, managing stakeholders and knowledge of wildlife legislation. The MRU keeper will be part of Melbourne Zoo's Wild Sea precinct and will liaise closely with this department's team as well as other key stakeholders, including Melbourne Zoos veterinary department. In conjunction with triage and response, the MRU Keeper will be at times responsible for the provision of husbandry requirements for rehabilitation animals rescued via the MRU and collection animals housed within the Wild Sea precinct.

 

Required skills include:

  • Trade level keeper
  • Animal capture and restraint / handling experience.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment
  • Excellent communication
  • Customer service experience
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Ability to remain calm and confident during high pressure environments
  • Driver's License
  • Under directions from the Chief Health Officer in accordance with emergency powers arising from declared state of emergency, successful applicants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and able to provide evidence of this.
