Locum Vet Positions at Sydney Zoo
Located in the heart of Western Sydney, Sydney Zoo strives to showcase a broad range of native and exotic animals using technology and advanced exhibit design, with a strong focus on animal welfare, conservation, and educating our visitors about animals and their habitats. Environmental and social awareness play a vital role in our message that highlights the indigenous culture and human influence on the environment.
The Position
This is an outstanding opportunity to be part of the veterinary team within an exciting new zoo, utilising your skills in an area that you are genuinely passionate about. This role will commence as soon as possible.
Sydney Zoo is looking for locum vets to assist the Manager of Veterinary Services in the ongoing health and welfare of our animal collection. Locums will be expected to provide relief on weekends and holidays on a rotational schedule as well as, to assist with preventative health care procedures scheduled in advance.
Remuneration will be based on hourly rates on site and day rates for standby.
Skills, Knowledge and Relevant Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a zoo or relevant/equivalent veterinary industry experience
- Veterinary degree recognised in Australia
- Current registration to practice as a veterinarian in NSW
- Tranquilizer firearm permit applicable in NSW
- Experience in the health, welfare and management of zoo animals
- Knowledge and experience using ZIMS
- Knowledge and experience working with ultra-potent opioids
- Demonstrated commitment to the conservation of species and ecosystems
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to work independently under broad direction or positively contribute to a team environment
- Proven ability in carrying out daily veterinary duties to a high standard ensuring all animal health, husbandry and welfare needs are met
- Demonstrated ability to work as a team to develop and implement animal diets
- Knowledge of and commitment to Workplace Health and Safety
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Effective decision making and problem-solving skills
- Driver's licence and the ability to drive a manual vehicle (preferable)
- First Aid Certification (desirable)
- Firearms Licence (desirable)
