Continuing, full-time opportunity available.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Specialist Small Animal Surgeon to join the team in the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Adelaide.

We are seeking a veterinarian who can provide leadership and excellence in clinical service delivery and teaching of small animal surgery to our DVM students. This position will be primarily located at the Roseworthy campus of the University of Adelaide but the appointee will be expected to teach and attend meetings at other campuses or facilities from time to time.

The School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences provides world-class, outcome-based education and training of animal and veterinary scientists in a research environment. The School is located on the University of Adelaide’s Roseworthy Campus, surrounded by great lifestyle opportunities including the Barossa Valley, beaches, sporting activities, benchmark schools and shopping facilities.

The Companion Animal Health Centre (CAHC) is the School’s small animal clinical teaching hospital and offers the general public and referring veterinarians a range of first opinion, emergency and referral specialist veterinary services from a modern, well equipped facility. Working in a clinical training environment for final year veterinary students, our passionate and dedicated staff have the opportunity to make an important contribution to the education of the next generation of veterinarians and veterinary technologists by involving students in case management and modelling the highest standards of clinical excellence and professional behaviour.

The position will suit an Australian Fellowship or American/European Boarded specialist with a track record in excellence in patient care and a passion for imparting knowledge, teaching and mentoring students to develop their clinical thinking and skills. The appointee will contribute to teaching in veterinary medicine programs through course coordination, lectures, tutorials and clinical rotations. They will also provide advanced small animal surgical treatment options for referred patients from across South Australia.

To be successful at Level B you will need:

  • A qualification in Veterinary Science or equivalent degree that is acceptable for registration in South Australia.
  • A Professional College specialist qualification (Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists or a specialist Diploma from a relevant college of the American or European Boards of Veterinary Specialisation) awarded in Small Animal Surgery or related discipline, or eligibility to sit Board examinations having completed an approved residency.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to teaching, supervising and mentoring veterinary students and veterinarian technicians within a clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a small animal surgery specialist level service caseload within a private practice or teaching veterinary hospital.
  • Exemplary personal qualities fully aligned with our institutional values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery.

In addition of the above, to be successful at Level C you will need:

  • A PhD or Masters post graduate qualification and Professional College specialist qualification (Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists or a specialist Diploma from a relevant college of the American or European Boards of Veterinary Specialisation) awarded in Small Animal Surgery or related discipline.
  • Significant experience in innovative and effective teaching, course coordination, supervision and mentoring of veterinary students and veterinarian technicians within a clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake original and independent research in a related area and supervise clinical research projects and/or postgraduate students.
