Description
The University of Surrey is an international university with a world-class teaching and research profile and an enterprising spirit. Inventive and forward thinking, our heritage shows a recurring theme of doing things differently – and achieving notable results. For example, we have won four Queen’s Anniversary Prizes and were awarded Gold for our Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) submission. As a result of our strategic plan and future vision, the School of Veterinary Medicine in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences is recruiting an exceptional person to the following full-time academic position to continue to add to the successes that the School, Faculty and University have already had:
Lecturer/Senior Lecturer One Health-One Medicine (Non-communicable disease)
We have recently invested in a new School of Veterinary Medicine and as part of its development, we are currently seeking applications from exceptional individuals with expertise ranging from molecular & cellular sciences to clinical sciences to deliver our ambitions to expand and develop the faculty’s research strategy within the Department of Veterinary Preclinical Sciences. The post holder will be involved in working together with other members of the department to drive the ‘One Health-One Medicine’ research strategy for non-communicable disease research and have had prior research experience in this field.
We have appointed several individuals in the field of cardiovascular research (clinical and basic scientists), musculoskeletal biology and tissue engineering as part of the departmental research focus. It is envisaged that the successful candidate’s expertise ideally should fit with or compliment these areas of research but not necessarily overlap. We are keen to appoint a candidate (i) that will bring synergistic expertise from other disciplines that will benefit our existing researchers (ii) who’s research portfolio will benefit from existing expertise within the department. This position comes with a 3-year fully funded PhD studentship (UK fees, stipend at standard rate and modest consumable funds)
You will have a PhD in a related field and prior solid postdoctoral research experience with key outputs. The post holder in expected to lead an independent research portfolio that is supported by external funding and evidenced by high quality publication, whilst contributing to the teaching of preclinical sciences (e.g. genetics, physiology, molecular biology, cellular sciences etc) at postgraduate and undergraduate level and selected subject in the later years of the veterinary medicine programme. Evidence of collaborative research network locally and internationally is essential. Candidates with a degree registrable with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons or the General Medical Council are particularly welcomed but not essential.
This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to play a leading role in helping shape the department and University’s research programme as well as deliver an innovative curriculum. Individuals with fellowship positions or successful bids are desirable but not essential.
In addition to competitive salary package, you will receive a generous annual leave entitlement, USS pension scheme, tax free relocation package, development opportunities, an award-winning pension scheme, childcare assistance, relocation assistance (where applicable) and discounted membership to our world-renown. The University is easily accessible by road and rail and is a short distance from both Heathrow and Gatwick airports
We acknowledge, understand, and embrace diversity. We particularly encourage applications from people who identify as Black, Asian or from a Minority Ethnic background.
Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Kamalan Jeevaratnam, Associate Dean International and Head of the Department of Veterinary Pre-Clinical Sciences via e-mail.
