We have an exciting opportunity to appoint a Lecturer in Comparative Animal Nutrition to carry out high quality research in the area of, or allied with, animal/fish/avian nutrition, to develop a portfolio of external funding, and to supervise research students and staff. You will support the delivery of animal/fish/avian nutrition teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The areas of teaching and assessment will include but not be limited to comparative nutrition, metabolism/metabolomics/microbiome, and animal production systems.
We welcome applications from candidates who hold a PhD or equivalent clinical/research training in a relevant subject area and have relevant research experience.
Veterinary Medicine has been rated 1st in the UK Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide. It has an excellent international reputation in teaching, clinical services and research and is accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the European Association of Establishments of Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
Job Purpose
To carry out high quality research in the area or allied with, animal/fish/avian nutrition and to develop a portfolio of external funding and supervise research students and staff. Support the delivery of animal/fish/avian nutrition teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Areas of teaching and assessment will include but not be limited to comparative nutrition, metabolism/metabolomics/microbiome, and animal production systems.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- To develop a portfolio of high-quality research activity as evidenced by publication and appropriate levels of external funding in the area or associated with animal/avian/fish nutrition and metabolism/metabolomics/microbome.
- To supervise and mentor research students and early career research staff.
- To develop research networks to build critical mass in relevant research area.
- To participate in the teaching of theoretical and practical skills advising on comparative nutrition, with an emphasis on small animal and exotics and metabolism/metabolomics/microbiome.
- To take responsibility for the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage in the examination process as appropriate and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
- To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning.
- To undertake administrative duties as requested by the Head of School and to lead specific initiatives to enhance the research environment and learning experience.
- To participate in quality assurance and enhancement activities, curriculum review and programme re-accreditation with the University and professional bodies to ensure high quality education provision is maintained.
- To participate in the Advisor of Studies (student mentorship) Programme and assist students with difficulties.
- To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile and innovation strategy in line with University, College and School objectives.
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1. PhD or equivalent clinical/research training in a relevant subject area.
Desirable:
B1. Veterinary degree registerable with the RCVS.
B2. Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Skills
Essential:
C1. Excellent communications skills, both orally and written.
C2. High quality outputs in a relevant subject area.
C3. Enthusiasm for, and ability to lead, high-quality research.
C4. Enthusiasm for teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a particular focus on small companion animals and exotics.
C5. Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.
C6. Time, project and people management skills.
C7. Ability to supervise and direct technical staff in the support of research and teaching activities.
C8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
C9. Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.
C10. Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.
For appointment at grade 8:
C11 Track record of successful research grant income.
C12 At least 4 research outputs at 3* level.
Desirable:
D1 Evidence of data analysis at an advanced level.
D2 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Minimum 3 years’ relevant research experience.
For appointment at grade 8:
E2 Higher education teaching experience
Desirable:
F1 Experience in the delivery of teaching and practical skill training at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
F2 Experience in the delivery of nutritional consultancy or practice
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7/8, £39,347 - £44,263/£48,350 - £56,021 per annum
