Instructor/Lecturer in Small Animal Emergency Medicine

51- 100% (12-month basis)

The Veterinary Clinical Medicine Department and the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is seeking applicants for an Instructor/Lecturer position in Small Animal Emergency Medicine. The Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Service is currently comprised of two full-time diplomates of the ACVECC, 4 ECC residents, 2 ECC specialty interns, 9 rotating interns, and 32 veterinary technicians. The emergency service is also supported by two full-time faculty with dual certification in ACVECC and ACZM. The emergency service has a robust caseload and is looking for candidates that enjoy working in a fast-paced emergency room and contributing to the clinical instruction to veterinary professional students. Professional opportunities: The College maintains a full-service 230,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art hospital for companion and zoological companion animals that supports, engages, and advances the teaching and research activities of the college. In 2020, the Veterinary Medicine South Clinic opened where the Wildlife Medical Clinic shares the clinical space with the Primary Care, Urgent Care, and Zoological Medicine services. Over the past 2 years, the Veterinary Teaching Hospital has made large investments in infrastructure, including a newly renovated small animal emergency room, intensive care unit, intermediate care ward, Purina nutrition room, client waiting area and patient exam rooms, in addition to renovations for our small animal internal medicine, surgery and anesthesia services.

Requirements: Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated an interest in emergency medicine and willingness to instruct students with varied experience. Candidates must have a DVM degree (or equivalent) and ideally have completed a rotating internship or a minimum of 1 year of post-graduate veterinary experience. We are also willing to consider new graduates in more of a mentored position. Candidates will also be considered if they have completed residency training (board eligible) through the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.

Duties: This position is a 51-100% appointment in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine. The appointment will be a non-tenured, academic position with a negotiable starting date after the closing date. Responsibilities for this position include primary case management of patients presenting to the small animal emergency service, communication with referring veterinarians, collaborative medicine within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and collaborative participation in the delivery of instruction to professional veterinary students during their clinical year. Emergency duties may include evening and weekend hours. Depending on prior experience, the candidate may also provide supervision and training for junior clinicians. Opportunities to pursue collaborative clinical research are also available. Faculty members are expected to perform the full range of designated faculty responsibilities including teaching, diagnostic/clinical service, outreach/public engagement, and university service.
