Description

An opportunity to lead and inspire a dedicated team in Goulburn Valley while overseeing the crucial milking process. Responsible for overall management of the dairy herd including milking, herd health and assisting with the breeding program. Coordinate and share duties and responsibilities with the farm manager. Make decisions pertaining to day-to-day operation, such as when an animal needs to be bred, treated, etc.; Decide when veterinarian or service personnel need to be called; Discuss herd nutrition/ feed issues with farm manager/nutritionists.

Job Description

1. Herd & Facility Management 

  • Collect and record data on cows, heifers and bulls
  • Observe all livestock for signs of illness or distress (several times daily)
  • Monitor maternity area and assist as required
  • Monitor and assist with care of fresh cows and newborn calves
  • Keep all animals visibly & electronically identified via NLIS and Easy Dairy System
  • Communicate culling plans with farm manager and the owner
  • Work with farm manager to ensure optimal supply of feed to all animals (including pellets hay and silage)
  • Ensure high animal welfare and proper treatment for sick herds

 

2. Milking Management 

  • Carry out standard operating procedures for milk harvesting including training all staff
  • Monitor milk quality metrics, including herd somatic cell count (SCC), thermoduric and bactoscan as reported by milk processor.
  • Ensure correct operation of milking machine, as per maintenance schedule and instructions from milking machine technicians.
  • Monitor and Maintain cleanliness of parlour, milk room and equipment room

 

3. Herd Health Management 

  • Observe cows, heifers and bulls for health problems
  • Treat and care for sick animals; record treatments in cow health records, especially withholding period requirements
  • Assist with veterinary visits and reporting, including reproductive examinations
  • Plan and Dry off cows at conclusion of lactation, as
