The opportunity

We are seeking a part-time Animal behaviourist to help with the delivery of behaviour functions at Greyhounds As Pets (GAP).  You will be responsible for helping with behavioural assessments of greyhounds for rehoming and implementing behaviour modification plans.   

As part of the GAP team, you will help the delivery of GAP’s greyhound behaviour functions including intake assessments, the timely completion of in-care behavioural assessments, assessing greyhounds according to national GAP standards, and the development and implementation of behaviour modification programs for greyhounds at the GAP facility and in foster care. You will also help with the development of programs and initiatives in the space of greyhound behaviour. 

You will help with education and transitioning of greyhounds into foster and adoptive homes. You will work closely with the foster care and adoption coordinator to ensure the efficient transition of dogs from foster families to adoption. Key administrative duties include the regular update of dog records with accurate data entry and diary notes for each dog and maintaining accurate records for reporting. 

At times you will be required to be available on weekends and outside of standard business hours to assist with events and urgent matters. 

 

About you

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • An in-depth knowledge of canine behaviour. 
  • Demonstrate experience in animal behaviour and training 
  • Demonstrate experience in canine behaviour management including preparing, implementing and adapting canine behaviour modification programs. 
  • Experience of canine training using positive reinforcement techniques 
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated abilities in liaising with internal and external customers 
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in the execution of work 
  • Analytical skills 
  • Prepared to work outside of normal business days/hours 
  • Well-developed computer literacy skills within the Microsoft Office/Windows Environment 
  • Current ‘C’ class driver’s licence 

 

Desirable

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the greyhound racing industry and retired greyhounds  
  • Experience with behavioural problems 
  • Experience with Shelter manager systems 
  • Veterinary nurse qualifications/experience 
  • Dog training certification (Australian recognised).
