Veterinary Nurse 

Full or Part-Time - Turramurra Veterinary Hospital, Sydney NSW

 

We are looking for a veterinary nurse with advanced nursing skills to join our team! 

Are you a veterinary nurse with additional experience in specialist level nursing and/or emergency and critical care, who is keen to upskill our current nursing team in a training and development role in the only ASAV accredited Hospital of Excellence in Sydney’s North Shore whilst being paid at market-leading rates? 

 

Turramurra Veterinary Hospital is an independently-owned practice with a supportive team who respect each other and collaborate to ensure that we provide the best care possible for our patients and their owners on a daily basis.

Our team is a group of around 30, including 8 experienced veterinarians and a combination of senior and student nurses, as well as our dedicated Customer Care Team and Hospital Manager. We aim for the gold-standard of care for our patients and to facilitate this, we have a high ratio of supportive team members to vets.

We are seeking a highly motivated qualified veterinary nurse with exceptional skills and a vibrant, positive and ‘can do’ attitude to expand our current Nursing Team of 5 qualified veterinary nurses and 2 student nurses.

 

About Your Role:

We are looking for a qualified and experienced veterinary nurse who has previously worked in a specialist or emergency setting with exceptional skills that they are keen to teach to our existing team members and inspire them to be the best that they can be.

You will be an integral part of our medical and surgical Nursing Team, supporting our Nurse Manager to ensure the days run smoothly and that patients receive a high level of care. Our Nursing Team work within a rotational roster and start at varying times to ensure adequate nursing cover and to build skills across all areas of the hospital.

If you have the desired skills to complement our existing Nursing Team and are interested in a Training and Development role with us, then we are interested in discussing your availability, which can potentially be flexible to suit your pre-existing commitments and support a healthy work-life balance.

We are looking for someone who can commit to at least 3 days per week, to ensure continuity of care and practice engagement. We would also be open to a candidate who wishes to work in both specialty and general practice.

 

Please note that our current opening hours are: 7am-8pm Monday to Friday (7pm close in autumn/winter), and 7am-4pm Saturday, and 9am-3pm Sunday. There is no on call work required for this role.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Training our Nursing Team in more advanced veterinary nursing skills
  • Preparing competency checklists and assisting in training student nurses to achieve their Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing
  • Preparing patients for surgery and other procedures
  • Anaesthetic monitoring
  • Placing IV catheters and blood collection
  • Assisting with dental scaling and polishing
  • Monitoring hospital in-patients, including emergency and critical care cases
  • Assisting vets and nurse colleagues with consultations and triage cases
  • Nurse consultations, when required, including but not limited to giving injections, nail clipping, weight assessments.
  • Maintaining a clean hospital – note we have commercial cleaners on a twice weekly basis
  • Customer service assistance – note we have a dedicated Customer Care Team on reception so this involves assisting only when necessary

 

About you:

Must haves -

  • Qualification as a Veterinary Nurse Cert IV or equivalent overseas qualification
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a qualified veterinary nurse
  • The ability to bring a positive attitude to the workplace
  • A love for teaching others to encourage and enrich their role
  • Willingness to offer support to our Nurse Manager and other senior nurses in their roles
  • Proficiency in IV catheter placement and jugular vein blood sampling
  • Experience in anaesthetic monitoring, including more complex or critical cases
  • CPR knowledge and experience
  • Experience in preparation of patients for surgery
  • Ability to follow directions carefully and have a desire to learn
  • Dedicated, enthusiastic, highly motivated and self-directed initiative
  • Team player
  • Reliability

 

Preferred :

  • Minimum 6 months experience in an emergency or a specialist-level hospital
  • Experience in Doppler blood pressure monitoring, Anitek multi-monitors, capnography is an advantage but specific equipment training can be provided if required
  • Experience in the use of Smart Flow (patient workflow system) or similar
  • Interest in filling the Training and Development role within the Nursing Team to further develop the skillset within our team and a plan for developing competency lists and supervising trainee nurses and veterinary students

Remuneration:

  • For the right candidate, we are willing to pay you market-leading rates (negotiable) in the vicinity of $65 000 - $100 000 (excluding 11.5% superannuation) depending on your level of experience, skillset, availability and team fit
