Founding Dean/Chief Academic Officer- The Lyon College Institute of Health Sciences (LCIHS) is seeking an experienced leader in veterinary medicine to serve as the founding Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine (LCSVM) in Little Rock, Arkansas. LCIHS is seeking an inspirational leader with proven administrative experience to work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators within the school and beyond to foster excellence in teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and outreach and service. The Dean will provide visionary leadership to determine forward-looking change in veterinary education and create an ambitious plan for the future.

The Dean serves as the chief academic and executive officer of the School, reports to the Provost of Lyon College, and represents LCSVM in institution-level discussions and strategic initiatives, as well as working with other deans as a member of the Lyon College Deans Council.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Implement an innovative educational model for professional preparation.
  • Provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the School’s educational, clinical, research, service, and patience care programs.
  • Appoint, evaluate and mentor the associate and assistant deans, department chairs, center and institute directors, and other positions, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with faculty, students and staff in order to create and sustain a unified vision for the School, to advance the School’s quality, reputation, stature, and goals, and to ensure the seamless integration of the graduate program with the mission and vision of Lyon College.
  • Work as a leader and champion for the School alongside alumni and the community of veterinary medicine practitioners to build and maintain financial and programmatic support for LCSVM.
  • Build and support a diverse and inclusive internal community.
  • Establish and execute a forward-thinking strategic plan.
  • Develop and maintain critical relationships across the college and broader community.
  • Engage with alumni, the public, community leaders, veterinary medical providers, potential donors, and state, federal, and global policy leaders.
  • Execute accreditation by the AVMA Council on Education.
  • Ensure, in cooperation with department chairs, center and institute directors, and other appropriate officers and leaders of the LCSVM, that appropriate structures, policies, procedures, and controls are in place for the SVM to achieve its teaching, research, outreach, and clinical missions.
  • Ensure that the SVM complies with regulatory requirements and standards of appropriate accrediting bodies and funding organizations.

 

Qualifications

  • A DVM degree or equivalent veterinary professional qualification, with additional advanced professional or academic degrees or advanced specialty board certification or comparable professional recognition preferred.
  • Distinguished academic background with a record of scholarly achievement, a history of teaching effectiveness, a record of administrative effectiveness, and an acknowledged reputation in the provision of exemplary animal health care.
  • A clear understanding and interest in embracing new pedagogical and clinical care techniques to meet current and future needs of learners and clinicians, and proven skills in education program development and interest and commitment to work with students, involving them in activities, programs, and service.
  • Demonstrated success in managing and leading a complex organization undergoing significant and persistent change, commanding the respect of students, staff, faculty, administrators, chairs, and institute/center directors; the ability to work closely with faculty and other campus leaders in an environment of shared governance, having sensitivity to the changing dynamics of academic veterinary medicine.
  • A collegial, consultative management style and ability to build consensus, including an understanding of issues and options facing veterinary medical schools and teaching hospitals, as well as other health professional schools, with the interpersonal and communications skills required to form productive partnerships and build relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a sense of community and to actively engage faculty, staff, students, alumni, and health professionals in support of a shared strategic vision.
  • Demonstrated success in creating an environment that enhances student learning and faculty research productivity and supports the professional development of faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated interest and ability in generating external funding, including private fundraising.
  • Appreciation, support, and enhancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the demonstrated ability to relate effectively to a wide variety of people of diverse backgrounds, including an understanding and respect for cultural, ethnic, gender, and individual differences.
  • The ability to represent the School effectively; to build strong relationships with internal and external constituents, to be an effective advocate for the School and the advancement of the professions; and to demonstrate political astuteness that allows one to be an effective liaison between the School and external stakeholders, including practicing dentists and other health professionals, affiliates, health care systems, business and industry, and local, state, and federal policymakers.
