The  College of  Veterinary  Medicine,  Cornell  University,  seeks an organized, motivated and mission-driven Field Program Manager (permanent staff scientist) to help manage a growing international field program on bat-virus dynamics and spillover at Cornell University and Bat One Health Research Consortium. We are looking for someone who is excited to help a creative team with ambitious goals to advance the science of pandemic prevention.

We are conducting field surveillance of bats, their ecology, health, and viruses in Bangladesh, Ghana, and Australia. Our teams are working to understand how environmental stress influences pathogen excretion and pathogen spillover and how we can prevent these pathogens from emerging in the first place.

In this role, you will facilitate the day-to-day operation of the field teams and assist the PI manage an elaborate research program. You will act as the primary point person for the field teams, and will maintain oversight of all aspects of the projects to ensure safe and efficient flow of samples and data from the field to the lab. You will act as the primary point person for the multiple project affiliated labs, ensuring field to lab communication is clear and effective for project end goals. You will join a team at Cornell including postdocs, students, a program manager, a data manager, and a lab technician along with joining a large international transdisciplinary team of scientists, students, and technicians across the globe all working to understand and prevent bat virus spillover (www.batonehealth.org).

Once established and trained in the lab, we will rely on you to Coordinate field programs by:

  • Help the PI manage and build a robust long-term scientific program.
  • Coordinate communication among field team leads, labs, and science teams along with sample collection, shipping, storage, and in-country analysis, when necessary.
  • Ensure field equipment and supplies are maintained.
  • Provide expertise including method development and troubleshooting for staff, students and faculty in line with your research expertise.
  • Lead the preparation of, and submission of protocols, approvals, and permits for sampling, biosafety, shipping, etc.
  • Ensure team compliance with biosafety, safety, ethics, permitting, and sample handling.
  • Help manage and oversee grant budgets and spending related to field programs.
  • Support field and lab personnel needs, including hiring, onboarding, and training staff.
  • Help improve/streamline data collection procedures and contribute to donor reporting.

 

What you need to have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and 3 to 5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Demonstrated experience and emotional intelligence working with diverse groups in an international environment.
  • Experience with wildlife field work and writing and submitting ethics and biosafety permits.
  • Proven sensitivity in working and communicating with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to lead and work in teams across time zones, prioritize and strategize tasks and meet established time frames.
  • Excellent organizational and effective management skills, with strong attention to detail.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS, D.V.M., or Ph.D. in a field relevant to the position (e.g., ecology, epidemiology, public health, veterinary sciences).
  • Laboratory experience (BSL2 minimum, BSL3 highly desired).
  • Experience in proposal and report writing.
  • Willing to travel to visit field sites.
  • Five or more years of experience in program management or equivalent.
