We are searching for a forward thinking, enthusiastic farm vet to join Westpoint Farm Vets in York.

About us

A friendly team consisting of three 100% farm vets and one admin assistant.

We’re ambulatory over mainly North and West Yorkshire with some forays across to Lancashire for export work. Clients are within an hour of the practice.

We are based in a livestock auction centre so the office tends to be busy with clients dropping in.  We also have a café on site as well as fields surrounding. The practice is a 10 minute drive to the centre of York and just as far to the hills so there is a huge choice of places to live, both city and countryside based.

We are a young, proactive team who do everything we can to promote flexibility, support, mentoring and teamwork. We are keen for someone to really feel part of the team and to enjoy the relationships we have built up with our client base.

Our work

We are a predominantly beef practice catering to both large and small enterprises. As such we have a high surgical, obstetrical and sick animal case load, along with breeding examinations and semen testing.

Our sheep base and involvement is increasing and there is huge room for growth in this area. We do little smallholder work however, camelid work in the area is growing.

The workload tends to be very seasonal with the quieter summer months giving us time to pursue post graduate courses and CPD. The business is supportive of sabbaticals if this is of interest during these months.

We do our own TB testing (LRA), product/animal export work, and are supportive of further education e.g. certificates.

We run a 1:4 rota with a day in lieu given for any weekend worked with bank holidays shared equally across the year. Support is always given if necessary.

Vets are part of clinical working groups depending on their interests; contributing to progressive medicine and practice.

The Area

The practice is on the eastern edge of York making it easy to get to from either the city centre or the surrounding countryside. York is a fantastic city with loads to do and great rail links. We are really close to popular walking and hiking routes as well as being within easy driving distance of the coast. Leeds is less than an hour drive away and Manchester is around an hour on the train.

The details

We are part of VetPartners, which gives you access to industry experts (such as in laboratories, and pig and poultry practices) and many employee benefits such as:

  • 5 days CPD annually and £1000 CPD budget
  • Pension Scheme
  • Employee Reward Scheme
  • VDS cover
  • RCVS fees paid
  • RCVS library membership
  • BCVA membership
  • Company Car (for private use too), Phone, Laptop
  • Health Insurance
  • 28 days holiday (plus bank holiday OOH shared equally)
  • Salary will depend on experience; £30K+

What are we looking for

Someone friendly and enthusiastic with at least 1 year’s farm experience who is happy to give things a go. Ideally we would like someone who is confident with surgeries, OOH and obstetrical work but support is available if you need a hand. We would consider a competent new graduate.

There is scope within this role to develop your career in many different ways, so if you’re looking to work in a progressive environment with supportive colleagues who value life both within and outside of work, please give us a call (01904 486712) for more details, or email with a CV and cover letter.
