Description

The Department of Clinical Studies-New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a faculty position in Large Animal Surgery. The successful candidate will be a DVM/VMD or equivalent and will be board-certified in the American or European Colleges of Veterinary Surgery with demonstrated expertise in equine elective surgery. Experience in farm animal surgery and equine orthopedics is desirable.

New Bolton Center has a robust and diverse elective surgery caseload, with an emphasis on sport horses. The surgery caseload is currently managed by 4 elective equine surgeons, 1 farm-animal specialist, 6 surgery residents, and 6 rotating interns. The surgery service at New Bolton Center is supported by sports medicine specialists (5 ACVSMR diplomates), emergency and critical care specialists (4 ACVECC diplomates), large animal radiologists (2 ACVR-LA diplomates), anesthesiologists (3 ACVAA/ ECVAA diplomates) and clinicians in other specialty services. The surgical caseload consists of approximately 1400 cases per year, with a species breakdown of approximately 80% horses and 20% farm animals (goats, cattle, sheep, camelids, and pigs). The successful candidate will participate enthusiastically in the clinical activities of the Large Animal Surgery service, including patient care and teaching and supervision of veterinary students and house officers; will contribute to the didactic and laboratory education of pre-clinical students; and will pursue an active individual or collaborative research program. Priority will be given to candidates with a proven teaching record of excellence, established publication record in an area related to large animal surgery, and potential for success in obtaining research funding. Preference will be given to candidates whose clinical and research interests will complement and expand existing strengths at New Bolton Center. Advanced research training is desirable but not required.

The position will be in the Standing Faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in the Clinician Educator track, which supports faculty members whose responsibilities include the traditional triad of research, clinical service, and teaching. The successful candidate will be appropriately apportioned to these academic areas depending upon their strengths. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
