Description
Charles Darwin University (CDU) is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified people to chair the Steering Committee of the newly established Research Institute for Northern Agriculture and Drought Resilience (RINA).
CDU has established RINA to develop research capabilities in areas of primary production within the Northern Territory (NT), focusing on horticulture, broadacre cropping systems, pastoral industries, biosecurity and commercial aquaculture, and to advance and support agricultural sector development across Northern Australia.
RINA will create and develop a critical mass of research excellence at Charles Darwin University to address the research, technical and innovation needs of the Northern Australia Agricultural sector, supporting growth and economic development in the industry sector. Establishment of the RINA, a partnership with industry, NT Government and University partners, will grow existing capability and attract bright new talent and an increasing share of competitive grants and the primary industries research funding base (Rural Research and Development Corporations) nationally. The institute will foster a greater focus for agricultural research in the NT that supports the growth agenda of the broader industry, including First Nations enterprises, and sustainable development, which will contribute to Commonwealth and Territory strategic growth agendas for the primary production sector.
This is an opportunity to assist in strengthening the university’s research performance in pastoral industry sustainability, including diversification of income sources such as through carbon markets, and is supported through a partnership involving CDU, the Northern Territory Government and industry representative groups including the NT Seafood Council, NT Farmers Association and NT Cattlemen’s Association.
The RINA is seeking an independent Chair to join our Steering Committee. Working closely with the Director of RINA this is an exciting opportunity to provide leadership in this regionally significant program.
In particular, the Chair will provide advice and leadership to the RINA Director and partners, building a culture of open collaboration and transparency between partners and stakeholders.
This individual will have appropriate skills and qualifications to act in the capacity as an independent member of the Steering Committee, contributing on all issues relating to the project and its governance and will provide expert advice and knowledge relating to working with First Nations communities within Northern Australia.
The committee will meet 4 times per year by teleconference, and will conduct an annual stakeholder engagement event.
About You:
The successful applicant will be a collaborative, innovative professional who is passionate about developing new activities that improve the economic, environmental and social strength of regional communities in Northern Australia.
You will have:
- An excellent understanding of the Northern Territory environment and a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with diverse range of stakeholders including industries, government, universities, research and extension organisations and Indigenous groups.
- An understanding of how Northern Australia is impacted by drought at all levels including social, economic, and environmental.
- Formal qualifications in governance (e.g. AICD Company Director’s Qualifications) or equivalent experience
- Outstanding communication skills with the ability to engage various stakeholders and effectively negotiate and gain results for all parties.
- Demonstrated experience in chairing complex committees and the ability to run an effective meeting.
CDU is also seeking Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified people to join the RINA Steering Committee as an independent member. This individual will have appropriate skills and qualifications to act in the capacity as an independent member of the Steering Committee, contributing on all issues relating to the project and its governance and will provide expert advice and knowledge relating to working with First Nations communities within Northern Australia.
The Independent Member of the RINA Steering Committee must demonstrate the following:
- Experience working with First Nations people in a Northern Australia context
- An excellent understanding of the Northern Territory environment and a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with diverse range of stakeholders including industries, government, universities, research and extension organisations and Indigenous groups.

- Formal qualifications in governance (e.g. AICD Company Director’s Qualifications) or equivalent experience
- Outstanding communication skills with the ability to engage various stakeholders and effectively negotiate and gain results for all parties.
This is a rare and outstanding opportunity to lead a major innovative project to make a significant impact in the agricultural industry in Northern WA and the Northern Territory. The RINA Steering Committee Chair and Independent Member will be paid an annual fee.
