Smart Pups Assistance Dogs is a not for profit charity dedicated to improving the safety and quality of life of children with special needs.
As leaders of placing assistance dogs throughout Australia, our continuing expansion has led to an opportunity to employ an individual who wishes to help our clients by training dogs to Assistance Dog level and supporting our clients through having an Assistance Dog in their home.
We are seeking a community minded individual with personal drive, energy and integrity to join our team. This busy and often physically challenging role will require dedication and a passion for supporting our clients and a natural ability and love for handling dogs.
To be successful in this role you will need to be positive, confident and self motivated with the flexibility to administer a variety of tasks. Sensitive human interaction will be a core skill and you'll need patience and to have highly-developed, flexible communication skills. Importantly you will need to love dogs and have an understanding of their needs and behaviours.
Main responsibilities:
- Train and work alongside assistance dogs to Smart Pups standards.
- Work in close collaboration with management, kennel staff, trainers and administration staff.
- Support the team to develop a strength-based collaborative culture where staff and volunteers can maximise their effectiveness and efficiency, and develop/ deliver quality person-centred services in an individualised funding environment.
- Ensure records and databases are maintained.
Essential Job Competencies:
- Qualifications in Animal Studies or Dog Training are desired or relevant industry experience and work history.
- Have dog handling experience as well as experience with working with families and individuals;
- Have pet care / kennel experience;
- Have the skill to implement training strategies based on proven animal behaviour methodologies for each individual dog;
- Be highly motivated by providing solutions, dog training skills/techniques
- Ability to meet the physical demands required of this role.
- Excellent client management skills.
- Well-developed written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Good computer literacy skills, Microsoft applications and experience with relevant data bases.
- Current drivers' manual licence and ability to travel independently.
Interstate travel may be required.
