The Director of Veterinary Management will be responsible for providing clinical veterinary care to animals used in research and for providing pro-active planning and oversight of all aspects of research animal health and well-being at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC).

Position Overview:The Director of Veterinary Management is responsible for providing clinical veterinary care to animals used in research at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). The Director of Veterinary Management is also responsible for providing  planning, implementation, and oversight of all aspects of research animal health and well-being. The incumbent will report to the Dean of the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS) at UMBC and provide counsel on business, fiscal, human resource, and administrative matters associated with promoting and maintaining the welfare of research animals.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide veterinary medical care and surgical services to research animals (primarily rodents with some fish and avian studies). Duties include, but are not limited to - Diagnosing and treating naturally occurring and experimental induced diseases in laboratory animals; performing routine veterinary rounds with an emphasis on monitoring transgenic, SCID, knockout, and athymic mouse colonies; and performing euthanasia, routine gross necropsy, sample collections, and microscopic evaluations and coordinate pathological evaluation of sentinels.
  • Clinical duty including the provision of holiday, weekend, and night emergency on-call duty coverage.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance, review protocols, and participate in IACUC and IBC proceedings
  • Directly supervise Specialist (Animal Lab Manager), including managing performance review process and setting priorities.
  • Actively participate in Post Approval Monitoring of IACUC Protocols.
  • Actively participate in Development of Animal Husbandry SOP’s and training implementation.

 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited school.
  • Current license to practice veterinary medicine in a state or territory of the United States and ability to obtain a Maryland license within 12 months of hire.
  • Minimum of two years laboratory animal clinical experience. Completion of an ACLAM recognized training program in laboratory animal medicine or equivalent experience.
  • Strong communication, management, and organizational skills. Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion, tact, and confidentiality.

 

Note:  This is a designated essential position supporting the animal care program and requires the ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during emergency conditions such as inclement weather and power/utility failure and/or night emergency on-call duty.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Licensure/ Certification Preferred: American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification ACLAM board certification.

Experience and knowledge of facility operations, including regulations, standards, and guidelines for care and use of animals in teaching, research, and service. Familiarity with Association for Assessment and Accreditation for Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) accreditation standards, as demonstrated in work history and credentials.
