Background of the New UAGM Veterinary School in Puerto Rico

 

The Universidad Ana G. Méndez (UAGM) is excited to announce the establishment of its new veterinary school in Puerto Rico, dedicated to advancing veterinary education, research, and service. Our mission is to provide world-class education and training to future veterinarians, with a focus on innovative teaching methods, cutting-edge research, and community engagement. UAGM is a private, non-profit higher education institution located in Puerto Rico, founded in 1949. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and licensed by the Puerto Rico Board of Postsecondary Institutions (JIP). It has three main campuses and eight university centers around the island. In addition, UAGM has the only television channel in Puerto Rico affiliated with the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). UAGM has an enrollment of approximately 23,000 students and offers around 240 academic programs that include technical certificates, associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and doctorates.

 

Position Summary

The successful candidate will be responsible of planning, organizing, executing, and directing the development and strengthening of the academic program of Small Animal Clinical Sciences of the School of Veterinary Medicine, in accordance with the established norms, policies, and procedures. The person in this position will also be responsible for establishing the corresponding guidelines and controls to safeguard the quality of the service and maintain administrative control.

 

Essential Duties

  • Develop and submit to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs the programming of courses of the Academic Program of Small Animal Clinical Sciences.
  • Participate in the recruitment process and supervise the teaching and non-teaching staff assigned to the academic program under responsibility.
  • Develop managerial and statistical reports related to the academic program, as required.
  • Monitor compliance with the work plan assigned to the faculty of the academic program.
  • Comply with the policies, manuals, academic procedures, and executive orders that apply to the teaching and non-teaching staff of the program.
  • Collaborate in the design of the laboratories and the learning experiences in Small Animal Clinical Sciences.
  • Identify training needs and promote its activities.
  • Comply with the actions established in the licensing and accreditation plan according to the academic offering.
  • Collaborate in the operational budget request process.
  • Recommend to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs the purchase and replacement of materials and equipment required for the student success.
  • Recommend to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs the development of new academic programs and participate in the creation of these.
  • Support the enrollment processes efforts to achieve the institutional goals.
  • Collaborate with the strategic retention plan and offer recommendations for the fulfillment of the established goals.
  • Comply with the provisions of the Faculty Manual in the aspects of evaluation and rank promotion.
  • Coordinate the participation of the faculty in the development of new academic programs or the curricular review of existing programs.
  • Comply with the requirements of the Office of the Registrar in relation to the academic offerings of the program.
  • Convene and conduct regular meetings with the faculty of the program.
  • Provide teaching/lecture and laboratory training in Small Animal Clinical Sciences.
  • Participate in extramurally funded research, including collaboration with external partners and student research advising.

 

Research and Scholarly Activities

  • Contribute to a productive research program focusing on the advancement of knowledge in your field.
  • Seek and secure external funding to support research endeavors.
  • Publish research findings in reputable, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research at national and international conferences.
  • Collaborate with colleagues within the institution and across the veterinary and small animal clinical sciences community.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary research that aligns with the strategic goals of the UAGM Veterinary School.

 

Instructional Activities

  • Deliver lectures, labs, and seminars that are engaging, evidence-based, and aligned with current best practices in veterinary education.
  • Utilize diverse teaching methodologies to accommodate different learning styles and enhance student engagement.
  • Develop assessments that accurately measure student learning and provide constructive feedback.
  • Stay current with advancements in veterinary science and education to ensure the delivery of up-to-date content.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to enhance teaching effectiveness.

 

Service

  • Participate actively in departmental, college, and university service activities, including committee work and student advising.
  • Contribute to the broader veterinary and clinical community through service to professional organizations.
  • Engage in community outreach initiatives that promote the mission and vision of the UAGM Veterinary School.
  • Serve as a role model and advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the institution and the veterinary profession.

 

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or international equivalent required.
  • Board Certification and/or PhD required.
  • Seven (7) years of academic and administrative experience in the university field in related roles.
  • Ability to effectively express orally and in writing in English.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Work is primarily performed in an academic setting, including offices, lecture halls, and laboratories.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
