Who we are

The Racing Industry Act 2020 established a new governance structure for the New Zealand racing industry, effective 1 July 2021. Amongst other changes, the Act established the RIB as the new independent entity to be responsible for integrity functions in the conduct of racing including compliance, adjudication and animal welfare.

The Act strengthened the RIB’s animal welfare mandate, stating that the objectives of the Board are to promote, and ensure compliance with, high standards of animal welfare, integrity, and professionalism by participants in the racing industry.

As our name suggests, it’s all about INTEGRITY – honesty, respect, trust, keeping promises and pride. The RIB is here to ensure the integrity of racing is maintained at the highest level, as this is critical for public and investment confidence in the racing industry.

We’re a team of circa 40 permanent people and around 100 casuals and / or contractors working across New Zealand. The Animal Welfare team is a team of 4, working closely with the stewarding and investigations teams.
